ONE BIG RAILROAD The Standard Oil Compauy now controls 75.940 miles of rail road in the United States capi talized at $3,895,220,000 this means that nearly one third of all the railroad mileage in the United States is under the con trol of thn Rookafallerft. And that the capital invested therein is equal to nearly one 25th of the aggregate wealth of all the people in the United . States, which in 1900 was $94,300,000, ooo. ': , Measured by extent of terri tory that the railroads, controled by the Rockefellers, serve, ' or reverse the proposition, the ter ritorial area that serves the Rockefellers and the relative size of their holding becomes . Btill more stupendous. That com pany, or set of men, commonly referred to as the Standard Oil Company of which Rockefellers are the head' now contiols the V&nderbilt-IIarriman groups of railroads with its 40,847 miles of track; the Gould Pacific groupe with 10,789 miles, the Rockefell er groupe proper with 10,293 and the Santa Fee system with 7,809 miles. .j The Rockefellers, together with the men they have taken into their fold, now control the railroads operating west of the Missouri river to the Pacific coast and' from the Mexican border on the eou'h to near the Canadian border on the north. CAN'T JOIN IN THE LAUHG The people of Oregon, on reading the numerous thrusts made at our state, ostensibly in a humorous .vein, by the press from outside the state, because of the dilempa into which one of our U S senators, two Represent atives in Congress and numerous other prominent citizens of the state have been placed by the U S Grand Jury, feel very much like the Uouaier boy, who in hunting ooona one night, bare footed, knocked the nail off of his big toe on a beech root. On be ing asked by bis companions bow be felt pointed to his bleeding toe and said "it hurts too bad for me to laugh with you and I am too big to cry. WIDE AWAKE The people of Washington are wide awake to the value of their school lauds and are send ing to the legislature, now iu session at Ulympia, petitions from all parts of the state" pray ing that no ; more school lands be sold inA tbat state for from five to ten years. This is a wise move and if carried out will largely increase the school fund as there is no doubt but the value of the school lands will increase with the devtlopetneut of the state. Had the people cf Oregon tak en this course years ago oar ohool fund would now be doable what it is. Had our last legislature passed an act stopping the sale of school land for 10 years and author ing the sale of timber thereon at a reasonable stumpsge, sever al millions of dollars would have been added lo the school fund.
