This is the 46 anniversary of the admission of Oregon into the Uaicn as a State. Territories. renortPd In tuJ Tha polling place In the Second Senate a bill for the admission of Oregon into the Unien , with the Constitution tbe people of Oregon had adopted in 1857. At that period in our national history the question of extend ing slavery into new states was the predomiuat one in American politics. Tbe atitude of Oregon on the Hlavery questioa' war enigmatical on a special vote on the clause ia the Constitution admitting or rejecting slavery in. Nov. 9, 1857 the vote stood to have Oregon a free State 7, 727 and for a slave state 2,645 but as OregOD politics was solid ly Democratic which meant that the Senators and Congressman from Oregon could be relied upon (or three votes to sustain the Fugitive Slave Law as it then stood on tbe U S statutes in case an effort should be made to repeal or modify it. The large majority against elevery iu Oregon made the pro slavery element doubtful if it could loug rely upon Oregon as a State to be as Bubservien. to tho ca;se of human slavery as it had been during its ten i torical period while the small uess.of the Republican vote in Oregon gave tbe Auti Slavery element in the nation little hope of assistance from Oregon in its battle with the slave power. The result of this uncertainty us to what the-real sentiment of Oregon would be in the final battle on the vote of modifying the Fugitive Slave law as de - sired by the Anti Slavery ele- meut oi the repeal of the U S statutes forbidding the Slave trade with Africa as demanded by the Slave holders iuterest created such a clash in Congress that the bill admitting Oregon was a burniug question, from April 5, 1858 to Feb 14, 1859, a period of ten months. But the question of the admission of Oregon as a State really began in 1856 when Gen. Joseph Lane the second deligate from Ore gon to Congress introduced a bill for its admission. Oregon when it joiued the Galaxy oi States was a far off regieu, it had no railroad or teie graphic communitation with the out side world and neither railroad, telegraphic or tele phone within its borders. Sup plies came around the Horn or r . . mi across toe xstnmus, lue ex ports from Oregon consisted of owes, cattle, bacon and fruit which wtre driven over the mountains to California or haul ed in wagons taking months to make the trip. The U S mails came by way of the Isthmus of Panama to San Francisco and thense to Portland. There were OUU SPECIALTY SHOES 1 Full Line "Perferred Stock" Good School Shoes! Owed Goods.
