This is a splendid indication. There is not a prosperous dairy section in the United States that is not prosperous in other lines Look this up if you are in doubt. A prominent business man of this city who has had consider able experience is emphatic in his belief that a mattress factory could 1 be easily secured and would give Steady' employment to several people every month in the year a no uiuaeus 01 inis county are simply waiting" for . the La Grande Commercial Club to take the initiative ' in 'securing an exhibit ; for the Lowis and Clark fair. The fair openB June 1st and it is hightime "that steps be taken immediately -1 Remember we are very soon goiag to have power for manu facturing purposes in this city and the next thing is 1 to secure industries that will utilize this power. As an illustration the La Qrande Iron Works yester day: placed an order for a fifteen horse power dynamo This is a starter. There is not a woolen Jmill in the state that is not making money and all market their pro duct in the east.'' Why' not' La Grande have a woolen mill The mills at'Union, Pendleton, Ore gon City, Albany and Eugene, are all rushed with orders There is no reason why such an insti tution should not 'pay here 'the same as the other places. 1- A pressing tne peopio auu not the people the club to be up and doiDg. ; La Grande has reached the point where it is intitled to free delivery, and according to the statement of a government post al inspector the only reason or condition which will in any way prevent the establishment of the free postal delivery throughout the city next June is the fact that the houses of the city are not numbered. This is a mat ter "which should be attended to by the city authorties. there is an ordinance now standing on the city ordiance book which provides for the numbering of all the houses in the city There is a map hanging on the walls of the city hall which was made exoresalv, for the purpose of r - giving to each lot in the entire city its proper number, ine nit has cone to the expense of --- o labeling all the etreets, and a number of the houses now have numbers over their v doors, but ,Vo f.nn4 Tviainwit" a Till-" o t numbered. It is the duty of the citv officials to see that " - . 1 every house in the city is num bered It is a fact that the gov ernment will not issue the order for free delivery until the 'city can assure the inspector that a carrier could find a given ad dress without asking every other citizen, he might happen to meet where the addressed person resides. This is a matter ' of importance and should receive prompt attention. Now the conditions are right here for the successful operation of a paper factory steps should be taken to secure it President Roosevelta stand for an equetable freight rate ' is the grandest ' strode for the common people that he has yet made. He will stir up the en tire nation on this eubject be fore he is through. It is with out doubt the largest question that is now before our own peo ple. This matter can not be prepared in a day and this matter should receive the attention of the Commercial Club.
