Tbe Commissioner of Education pre -sented some Interesting data and sta tistics, of education in tbe United States Tbe number o( pupils enrolled In the oo mm on schools during the year wat 16,009,301, the same being 20.04 per oent of the entire population, as esti mated by the Ceusus Bureau, viz., 79.- 900,389. The average dally attendance for 1903 was 11,054,502, tbe same being 69.2 per oent of the total number en rolled. This la the largest average at tendance on the number enrolled ever reported In the 7nltd States. The av erage moathly wages ot teachers was 149.98 for males and 140.61 for females The above figures relate to tlie pub lic schools only. In addition the pri vate schools are estimated at 1,093,876 pupils for the elementary schools, and 108,223 students are reported (or acad emies and other secondary schools. The total enrollment tor tbe year, in- clad log public and private, elementary sedondaryand higher education, was 17,539,478 pupils, and to this there should be an addition made for even ing schools, business schools, private kindergartens, Indian, sohools, State schools for defectives, orphans, eto., 648,440, making a graad total i f 13, 1S7,918 in general and speolal sohools. In 1903, 6)7 cities, containing" 8,000 Inhabitants and upward, and 689 vil lages, containing 4,000 to 8,000 inhabi tants reported to the bureau. , The ag gregate number of publio school child, ren enrolled In these , 587 cities was 4,274,071 pupils; and there was alto an enrollment of 968,002 pupils in private and parochial (ohools; male teachers, 7.280: female trhr. fi Rfirt. THmm cities alone expended, $122,353,007. and their entire population aggregated $25,344,214 people.
