The republicans are up, neces sarily severe about the demo cratic enthusiasm ojr Judge Parker. After eight years in the wilderness democrats have a right to be hysterical. Baker City Democrat. The next big attraction will be Ringling Bros cirous which will be here in August. They always draw a crowd because they have the reputation of always having what they advertise. It is too late Tor tins season but another year should not pass without there being a fruit canning establishment in opera tion in this city. This valley needs one and tbis is tb most central piont in the valley. Next year will see the comple tion of the Morgan lake power and water proposition which means an abundance of cheap power, and cheap power means that the establishment of manu featuring plants. La Grande has certainly been leading a streuuous life for some time. We commence during the county seat campaign, then came pioneer day, the O. A. R'., the Fourth and this week a circus and the carnival. One continual round of pleasure. We can congratulate ourselves that the usual worry of an exoiting presidential campaign from a local stand point will not be a very severe strain upon us this year. This county shbuld take hold of the matter of having a suitable display this year at the state fair. The past two years resulted in almost a total failure from the fact our display did not reach Salem until very late. Quite a pertiou of the display sent to the state fair could be used during the Lewis and Clark fair and we cannot afford to miss that opportunity. This county by reason of the 1905 fair has been taxed many thou sands of dollars and the only possible way for us to reap returns on this investment, is the advertisement we may recieve from an exhibit, auch as this county is capable of making during the fair. Exhibits are not secured in a day and we should prepare for it this season. Forty seven thousand dollar reductiou in our county debt is not a bad showing for Our county . The fact is we are not used to such sudden announce ments but let the good work go on. While the next six months will not do so well, in fact if we keflP e t six months we will do well, at any rate iuer wjh j,e a handsome reduo . . fc . . . . county by the removal ol the county seat to La Grande that the debt will be still further reduced duriug 1905. That big debt which has been hanging over this county for the psst, decade will soon look like thirty cent. Something ha injected life into the stock market right in the middle of summer when operator usually prefer to have it maintain a quiet demeanor. Quotation rise and rise. Wh aver a flood of protit-Uki g ! tale i experienced, the maikel absorbs them rapidly and goes on quietly moving upwa.d. It, looks ' as though (be gt-nt-r-l ' ptospesity of the country hud dragged Wall street out of the bole into which it plunged iih it load of Steel, Copper, Ship building trust aud other more or leaf worthless securities. The people who lost money in the slump may nut have recouped then losses, but others have been making money which they are willing to invest in the bargains that the exchange has to oiler. La Grande merchants who use mile posts s . advertisements along the road should see to it that tnese posts are corect. Many of them which state the distance to La Grande ate not placed with any reference to the real distance from town. There are therefore misleading to the public. The mile posts when correct are a great convience to the public and are therefore good advertisements, but when put up just any old place they are not of any value aud realy are detriment to all concerned. The county should place sign boards at all toe road crossings giving the distance and direc tion to La Grande, and the other towns for that matter. As a mat ter of fact there is not a half dozen sign boards in the county wbow the direction or dislance to La Grande The -La Grtnde Commercial Club should take this matter up and see thut proper sign boardB are erected and mantained. It is a simple matter of business which should be looked after and the Commercial, Club is the proper organization to take the matter up. i 8BRIOUB 8T0MACH TROUBLE CURED. Ex United States Senator PettiKrew of South Dakota, who was cbairmsn of the Democratic delegation from that state to the St. Louis Convention that nominated Parker for the presidency, voioes the sentiment ot many Demo crate when in speaking of the set down that convention gave Bryan, said : "Intellectually and morally, Bryan towered far above his opponontB. A political party that would discard his leadership for the leadership of Bel mont and Hill and the former slave owners of the Fouth certainly has not exercised that judgment and conscience that forebodes success."
