' Tbe pupils of the L Grande High School won the debate In the contest last night, and In consequence are feel ing very jubilant. : The queatiou wbb : "Resolved that protective duties are of more benufit to the Uulted States than a ta'ifl for revenue only." v , The' affirmative was argued by the Union school and the debaters were, Eugene Reuter, Chester Hwai-kliamcr and Ruth Hollenheck, ' The La Grande school supported the negative and the nebaters were (i rover Melville, Noll Young and Herman Clark. ;;; The speakers from both schools are deserving of great credit lor the able manner In which they handled tbelr subjoot. It was evident that much time and thought bad been devoted to preparation of their speeches, and while the young people from Union were de feated in tho debate, they have no cause for mortification at tbe contest was close. : 1 Then Union carried off two of the honors.
