Tyson said North Santiam State Rec- reation Area is a family tradition “since I was a kid, really, just mostly for picnics and stuff. It’s a nice, easy place to bring the kids.” When asked what he likes about the park, he grinned and immediately re- plied, “everything, the river, the scen- ery, the cleanliness. It’s just a nice place, a good easy place to come. Sunday’s outing to the boat ramp fishing hole was strictly kids stuff for the Sloan clan, Tyson said. “This is easier for the kids here to cast,” he said. “We bring them here and they can learn how to cast and get used to the riv- er and stuff like that.” Later in the summer, Joe said that they will get serious about fishing for summer-run steelhead “None this year. This is my first time out,” he said. “This is a little early, though. I don’t think there’s too many over the falls, yet.” He was referring to the steelhead and salmon counts at the fish ladder at Wil- lamette Falls in Oregon City. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife online link 2018 to monthly fish counts at Wil- lamette Falls is https:// www.dfw.state.or.us/ fish/fish_counts/willamette/2018/ 2018_Monthly_ sheet.pdf. On a personal note, I’ve also had some success drift-fishing with night crawlers or salmon roe, and have hooked steelhead into September. North Santiam State Recreation Area with the clear, cold river as a backdrop also is picture-perfect. I’ve attended a couple of ceremonial releases at the park of small Chinook salmon that were raised in classroom aquariums from fertilized eggs to finger- ling size as yearlong biology/ecology projects. And about a half-decade ago, Victor Panichkul-Ackerman, then-food and wine writer extraordinaire, and I, your interminable outdoor scribbler, tag- teamed for a scheme that the editors cooked up (pun intended) for an editori- al and online pond-to-table tie-in series called Hook ‘em and Cook ‘em. When it came time to shoot the pro- motional photo of Victor and me to jump-start the project, I suggested that the primo place to capture the mood was, naturally, North Santiam State Recreation Area. And there we are: Vic in chef ’s garb, me in waders and fishing vest, standing in the river, smiling. And once again confirming my bias.
