WOODWORTH STATESMAN JOURNAL A Salem man serving a life sentence at the Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla died un- expectedly Saturday. Richard Bradbury, 61, was found unresponsive in his cell just after 3:30 a.m. Medical staff performed life-sav- ing efforts, but he was pronounced dead shortly after. As with all unanticipated deaths of state prison inmates, the Oregon State Bradbury Police Criminal Investigation Divi- sion is conducting an investigation, prison officials said. Bradbury was convicted of aggravated murder and first-degree arson in 1994 for bludgeoning a gas station attendant to death and setting him on fire. A customer at the gas station outside Gates found the bloodied body of the victim, a 91-year-old man, and contacted police. Bradbury was later arrested for attempted to pass checks stolen from the victim at several North Santiam Canyon businesses. He was sentenced to life in prison and entered prison custody on March 15, 1994. Santiam Summerfest brings fun to the streets of Stayton JUSTIN MUCH STAYTON MAIL Stayton’s most festive day of the summer will last a little longer this year. The 22nd Santiam Summerfest takes place Saturday, July 29, with vendors opening up downtown at 10 a.m. and remaining until 4 p.m. Per tradition, the Stayton Summerfest Car Show rolls into Pioneer Park an hour earlier and parades out with a grand exit at around 3 p.m. But Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce President Carmelle Bielenberg has spent considerable time in recent weeks lining up the event’s entertainment, aiming to keep the music and food available through 6 p.m. The idea behind ex- tending hours for food, entertain- ment and the beer garden is to ac- commodate a broader base of area residents. “We have extended the hours for the food, brews and live entertain- ment, located in the block between High and Marion streets until 6 p.m. in hopes that it encourages folks and vendors to stick around, relax and get to know their neighbors,” Bielenberg said. One new venue added to the mix this year is the Charles and Martha Brown House at First Avenue and High Street where the Summerfest artists alley will take place inside while the Santiam Historical Soci- ety will be holding a fundraising rummage sale out back. “We are really excited to partner with the Santiam Heritage Founda- tion this year for our Art Show at the Brown House,” Bielenberg said. “It’s a great way to showcase the work of local artists while giving festival-goers the opportunity to sneak a peek inside of one of the most beautiful historic homes in our area.” Also new is the Corn Hole Tournament, which will register up to 16 competitive teams in its first go around at this event.
