Appeal Tribune Wednesday, June 28, 2017 3A TIFFANY VU / APPEAL TRIBUNE CDs, DVDs and videotapes are also available for checkout at the Silver Falls Library. Radio Frequency ID boosts CCRLS libraries braries one by one, han- dling every item in each library to apply the tags and pair them with exist- ing barcodes. That tran- spired to the tune of more than a million items. The technology helps library staff work more efficiently, allowing them to check in and out a stack of books on the move. Goodyear said an additional benefit is that libraries can now add more modern security or automated materials as they see fit. Chemeketa library provided staff and ma- terials for the conversion project, while most mem- ber libraries also assist- ed with staff and volun- teers. The group is also updating the library ser- vice’s self-check and staff computers. JUSTIN MUCH APPEAL TRIBUNE Local library patrons may notice that process of checking out materials has become more effi- cient of late. Chemeketa Coopera- tive Regional Library Service Executive Direc- tor John Goodyear an- nounced recently that member libraries are wrapping up a year-long project that will stream- line many operations. Ra- dio Frequency Identifi- cation (RFID) tags have been added to collections of all member libraries, including Silver Falls, Stayton, Mt. Angel, Jef- ferson and Lyons in the east Willamette Valley. Goodyear said extra staff was hired and moved through the li- PHOTOS COURTESY OF FRIENDS OF SILVER FALLS STATE PARK Antique cars will be a feature of the 8th Annual Historic Silver Falls Days. The Forest History Cen- ter will have a display of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) artifacts and a list of thousands of names of the 80,000 men who served in the CCC in Oregon. Among the hands-on activities is a miniature canoe race Saturday, which celebrates Al Faus- sett’s 1928 canoe trip over the South Falls and in- cludes prizes for the top three finishers. It’s espe- cially popular with the kids. “They buy a small (toy) canoe for a dollar and can watch it go over the falls in the afternoon race,” Nelson said. “They can also watch a couple of the rangers in the water below South Falls trying to collect all the canoes. That is always fun.” Sunday will see more demonstrations of an- tique logging tools and the farrier demonstra- tions. A detailed schedule is available online at “His- toric Silver Falls Days” in the “Events” tab at www.SilverFallsState Park.wordpress.com. The park is located off Highway 214 S about 16 miles southeast of Silver- ton. The event is free, but a $5 day-use parking per- mit is required. Annual permits are available for $30. Rick Heuchert, adviser Keith Smith and members of the Silverton Fire District Explorer Post at a newly constructed loaner station. Jackets Continued from Page 1A jor part of any lifesaving effort,” the district stated in a press release. The district accepted donations and raised the resources to construct life-jacket stations. Dis- trict officials saluted the city of Silverton; Citizen's Bank; Kiwanis; Marion County Public Works; Ed- ward Jones, Tim Yount; and Withers Lumber for their help in seeing the stations to fruition. Grambusch said the life jacket loaner stations were constructed by the Fire District Explorer Post and hold several adult and youth sized per- sonal flotation devices. "The Silverton Explore Fire Post worked really hard; those kids are just awesome and their advis- er, Lt. Heuchert, is just great," Grambusch said. "They took this project and just ran with it -- saw that they could do some good for the community and they really put it to- gether." The district hopes ev- eryone heading out to the water makes use of it. “The process is sim- ple,” Grambusch noted. “Take them off the hang- ers and use them and then put them back when you are done with them. There is no charge for this ser- vice.” Heuchert and the Ex- plorer Post have already erected two stations, and they plan to construct an- other at Scotts Mills Coun- ty Park, and perhaps oth- er locations. "We’re hoping it’s going to save some lives," Gram- busch said. STATESMAN JOURNAL A man has died after a boat he was in tipped over June 21 in Detroit Lake. Officials have identi- fied the man as Chester Correll, 72, of Corvallis. Marion County Sher- iff’s Office deputies re- sponded at 12:30 p.m. to the Hoover arm of Detroit Lake following a report of a boat capsizing. One woman and two men had been fishing in a 15-foot aluminum boat. One of them stood “and the boat partially cap- sized,” the sheriff’s office said. None was wearing a life jacket and they all went into the water. Other boaters came over when they saw what was happening. Two of the three capsized boaters were able to get out of the water on their own, but the third had to be pulled from the lake by rescuers, according to the sheriff’s office. Off-duty firefighters from Gaston, Stayton and Sublimity fire depart- ments, who happened to be nearby, came to help and one of them per- formed CPR on Correll. He was taken by air ambu- lance to Salem Health hos- pital and died later, ac- cording to the sheriff’s of- fice.
