Alia Parsons is transfer-
ring and will play basket-
ball at Clackamas Com-
munity College.
The 5-foot-10 wing was
on the roster of Grand
Canyon
University’s
women’s basketball team
this year, but did not play
and redshirted.
Parsons signed a let-
ter of intent to play bas-
ketball at Clackamas on
May 14. She will have
four years of eligibility
remaining.
As a senior at Silver-
ton in 2016, Parsons aver-
aged 21.4 points, 4.6
steals and 3.9 rebounds
and led the Foxes to the
OSAA Class 5A state
championship.
She was named the
Mid-Willamette Confer-
ence player of the year

and first-team Class 5A
all-state.
As a junior, she was
the Mid-Willamette Con-
ference player of the
year after averaging 18
points and 6.5 rebounds
per game.
As a sophomore she
was first-team all-league
after averaging 18.3
points and three steals
per game.
Silverton hires 3 head coaches

It’s been a busy late
spring for Silverton High
School athletic director
Wade Lockett with the re-
cent hiring of three new
head coaches: Josh Craig
(football), Jamie McCar-
ty (boys basketball) and
Derek McElfresh (boys
soccer).
Lockett said all three
coaches have similar at-
tributes that made them
attractive candidates.
“We want people that
teach character. We want
people that teach integri-
ty,” Lockett said. “Our
coaches have to under-
stand that the things that
they coach really are an
extension of the class-
room. We coach these
sports and these activ-
ities as an avenue to
teaching greater les-
sons.”
Craig, who graduated
from Silverton in 2009,
has big shoes to fill. He re-
places John Mannion,
who
re-
signed in
April and
accepted
the same
position at
the
new
Craig
Mountain-
side High
School in
Beaverton.
In seven
seasons at
Silverton,
Mannion
McCarty
had a 57-20
record, in-
cluding
league ti-
tles in 2014
and 2012,
three state
semifinal
McElfresh
appear-
ances and a runner-up fin-
ish in 2014.
Craig
previously
served as an assistant
football coach for the
Foxes.
“Coach Craig was an
extremely valuable mem-
ber of coach Mannion’s
staff,” Lockett said.
“We want people that teach character. We want
people that teach integrity.”

high school. He’s great
with kids and he’s been
part of a culture that we
believe is very good for
our kids and for our com-
munity, and because that
was the case we didn’t
feel like we needed to go
outside of our staff to find
somebody new.”
McCarty, who takes
over for Steve Roth, was
boys basketball coach at
Stayton from 1998 to 2007
and led the Eagles to sev-
en consecutive league ti-
tles and a stretch of 44
consecutive league victo-
ries. He is known as an
outstanding
defensive
coach.
Roth was Silverton’s
boys basketball coach the
past three years.
“I would say (McCar-
ty) was one of the, if not
the most dominant coach
in that classification dur-
ing the years that he was
at Stayton,” Lockett said.
“He’s the consummate
teacher.”
McElfresh replaces
Kyle Calder, who led the
Silverton boys soccer
program the past three
years.
McElfresh was the
head girls soccer coach at
Silverton from 2006 to 08,
and the Foxes earned
playoff berths each sea-
son.
“The big deal with De-
rek is he’s good for kids,”
Lockett said. “We know
that he has a strong
enough background in
soccer to be able to lead
our kids in a positive di-
rection.”
