Appeal Tribune Wednesday, August 3, 2016 3B If I were mayor I would improve town’s image CANYON VIEWS SOPHIA BORGSTAHL Scotts Mills, a small country town that hardly anyone knows about. It’s a small corner of heaven, with just a few problems. For instance, kids at my school say that kids have nothing to do after school so they get into trouble, or that in Scotts Mills there isn’t tons of businesses so as a result there are a lot of people who don’t have jobs. As Mayor I would build a rec-center, and change the image of our town by generating more businesses to create more jobs. In the town of Scotts Mills kids have practically nothing to do after school so they get into trouble. So my first idea is to build a recreational center. At the rec- center there would be a basket ball court, after school games and activities. To go to the rec-center we would have mem- berships that could cost 5 dollars a month or 60 dollars a year. We could get more money to run a rec-center by get- ting an After School Activity Grant. Also instead of building a new building we could turn a different building that hasn’t been used into a rec-center. To run the rec-center we could have small jobs like watching and running games. The rec-center would only be open from 3:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on week days because most kids are out of school at 3 p.m. and on Saturdays it would be open from noon to 5 p.m., Sundays it would be closed. To me when I go to Scotts Mills it looks like one giant neighborhood. If we had more businesses that would help, Kids at school say that we really need side walks around town for more safety and a public restroom. I think we could put that by one of the parks if any where. Around town there’s a lot of trash so to solve this we could have teams go and pick up trash. 25 peo- ple would split into 5 teams so they could cover more ground. Our town has not businesses except for the market and rolling sandwiches. So if we had more businesses it would boost our economy. I learned that 791,222 people were on food stamps in 2015, so that means a lot of those people are un- employed. Oregon is ranked #5 out of 50 states for the most people on food stamps. To fund those EbT cards it costs about 98 million $$. One of those 791,222 is my mom. Anyway to run businesses you need people. The kind of businesses I’m thinking is a coffee shop, drug store, a diner and some sort of tourist shop for people who visit our town. This could improve our town image. One day I would love to see a recrea- tion center, a better image for Scotts Mills and more businesses come into re- ality. Scotts Mills is a wonderful commu- nity with a lot of potential and with the right push as mayor, I believe it could reach its full potential. The 3.79 billion board feet harvested last year represents an 8 percent decline from 2014, and that harvest was slightly lower than 2013. Brandon Kaetzel, a top economist at the department, said the decrease was largely driven by a slowdown in exports to Asia. Moreover, an increase in Canadian lumber hurt demand for Oregon logs and an active fire season caused problems. One board foot of lumber is a foot wide, a foot long and an inch thick. It takes 10,000 board feet to build a roughly 1,800-square-foot house. Sixty percent of Oregon’s forest land is federal. Industrial and family owned lands comprise another 34 percent and the rest is divided between entities such as the state, counties and tribes. The statistics show the harvest slumped across all ownership types, ex- cept state-owned. Douglas County, in southwest Oregon, remained the state’s top producer in tim- ber volume, though its total fell to about 560 million board feet. Neighboring Lane County was next at almost 553 million. Both counties topped 600 million in 2014. Though most timber-rich counties saw a decline, some defied the trend. Klamath County’s harvest jumped to 131 million board feet — 27 percent more than in 2014. Counties such as Baker and Grant OREGON DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY A forest thinning operation on the Deschutes National Forest. saw even higher percentage gains, but based on much lower volume. Oregon’s timber harvest is less than what it was before environmental issues such as the spotted owl led to reduced logging on federal lands. The harvest peaked at nearly 10 bil- lion board feet in 1972 and has not ex- CLASSIFIEDS Discover Discover Disc Di scov sc over ov er your y your ourr new ou new ne w home ho home me Find a new job or career silvertonappeal.com Place an ad online 24/7 at StatesmanJournal.com or call 503-399-6789 • 1-800-556-3975 Turn here for your next vehicle HOMES & RENTALS JOBS ceeded 5 billion since 1993.
