He’s very family- oriented and that’s what our event is about.” Homan, who has par- ticipated in the Stampede for “about 10 years,” is an X Games Bronze Medal- ist, two-time X Games Champion and 14-time X Games finalist. “I grew up doing a lot of motocross racing and was always a very technical rider and a good jumper,” he said. “I started doing FMX when it was official- ly recognized as a sport in 1997. But it’s like jumping out of an airplane or gym- nastics. You have to ease into it and it’s a lot of time and hard work. “It’s really exciting for an audience to see it in real life. It’s much differ- ent than on t.v. You can tell that we really are over 40 feet in the air doing flips and spins.” Justis said that one of the new elements they will be adding this year is a race-off between Ho- man and rodeo perform- ers. “Justin will be compet- ing against the barrel rac- ers to see who is the fast- est,” she said. Although Homan com- petes or performs in shows nearly every week- end and suffered severe injuries during one of his first years here, the Stam- pede is one of his favor- ites. “I really like the rodeo element and all the mu- sic,” he said. “It makes it a lot of fun. It’s a great ven- ue and a great audience.” After all these thrills, make a weekend of it at the Cowboy Breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon, Satur- day and Sunday, at the Sublimity Fire Station, 115 NW Parker St. Cost is $5 for adults 13 – 54, $3 ages 4 – 12 and 55+, under 4 free. Proceeds will benefit the Volunteer Firefighters Association. Pulling all of these ele- ments together, the Stam- pede Board is quite pleased with the recep- tion the event has gotten. “We’ve been growing year to year,” Justis said. “The support we get from businesses and the com- munity is amazing. People are loving it more and more and we’re always trying to offer something new to give back.” annetteutz1@gmail .com or follow at twit ter.com/AnnetteUtz ESTABLISHED 1880 Previously the Silverton Appeal Tribune & Mt.
