Angel Tow- ers. She was three weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. Ann was born in West Frankfort, Illinois, daugh- ter of English immigrants Michael and Catherine (Quayle) Lynch. She was the sixth of ten children, the half of a set of identi- cal twins. She and her sis- ter Margaret always shared a very close rela- tionship. Ann graduated from Frankfort Commu- nity High School in West Frankfort. The family moved to Silverton on S Water St. shortly after many of the coal mines were shutting down and work was hard to find. While working as a pro- jectionist at the Palace Theater, Ann was intro- duced to Carl Reed while he was on leave from the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a B-25 pilot in the Pacific, and their re- lationship blossomed while writing letters back and forth. Carl even named his plane “Annie.” They were married on Nov. 8, 1946. Ann settled into her life as housewife and mother to four chil- dren, one boy and three girls. Ann and her mother were two of the founding members of St. Edwards Episcopal Church in Sil- verton and was active in the Women’s Guild. She enjoyed her Thursday evenings out with her longtime bowling team and continued to bowl into her 80s. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and china painting. When her last child was into her teens, she took on a part-time job as assistant cook at Robert Frost Elementary School. She enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for the family and hosting the Fourth of July picnics at their farm on Silverton Road. Ann is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Carl; her three daughters, Linda (Herb) Romey, Cindy (Larry) Key, and Cheryl (Rick) Rue; daughter-in-law Cin- dy Reed; twelve grand- children; and twenty-five great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son, Carl, Jr. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2016, at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton. A fu- neral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016, at St. Edwards Epis- copal Church, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, monetary memorials may be made to St. Edward’s Episcopal Church. The Appeal Tribune encourages suggestions for local stories. Call the newsroom at (503) 873-8385 ext. 2. DANIELLE PETERSON/STATESMAN JOURNAL Crews clean up a 550-gallon diesel spill at an AT&T tower on Hall Ridge in the Willamette National Forest above Detroit Lake. Spill Continued from Page 1A ment of Environmental Quality. “In none of them have we picked up any diesel product.” Testing will continue but less frequently, Brown said. AT&T hired NWFF Environmental of Philo- math to clean up the site, according to DEQ docu- ments. Beginning Feb. 12, ab- sorbent booms and pads were used to capture some of the diesel. Then, about 41 cubic yards of soil was re- moved and taken to the Waste Management Riv- er Bend Landfill in McMinnville. Diesel also accumulat- ed on top of a bedrock outcrop about 40 feet downhill from the re- lease area. Soil on top of the out- crop will be excavated by hand about one foot deep to bedrock, according to the documents. The job was made more difficult by heavy snow on the 13-mile log- ging road used to access the site. Now, AT&T will use enzyme products to help degrade remaining die- sel at the site, Brown said. ‘‘ We’ve had a lot of surface water sampling...in none of them have we picked up any diesel product.” GEOFF BROWN Oregon Department of Environmental Quality BIRTHS The following are birth an- nouncements submitted to the Silverton Appeal Tribune.
