Apples of the finest quality can be grown in every part of the county, providing varieties suitable to the locality are selected, and the proper care la given the orchard. It must be kept in mind that there is no other fruit grown that ro quiries so full and complete knowl edge of detail to bring it to the highest degree of perfection. Gen eral principles will apply everywhere, but there are local conditions and methods of practice that muBt be mastered, and can be acquired only by close observation and experience. LOCATION AND SOIL. The apple adapts Itself to a wide Tinge of toil conditions. The safest baark rula 4. la to obMrv I In four growth and a weak tree. ACE OF TREE TO PLANT. Hy all means plant only yeurling trees. You can head them down where you want to start the heads and by proper training secure ft low -headed tree that you can culti vate close up to, and that will be practically self-supporting under a load of fruit. Regarding the best place to se cure trees the advic of nil ex perienced fruit growers is: calities have been pronounced by experts as far superior to grown in other districts, both in flavor and keeping qualities. There fore we should not overlook these verities when planting an orchard in that district. Conditions in the Yankton, Warren and Scappoose districts appear socially favorable to the growing of such varities as Northern Spy, Jonathan and possi bly the Early Transparent. Other varities also produce well in these localities, but it is possible that other sections can grow them better. Growers who intend planting for commercial purposes should limit their planting to two or three varieties. DISTANCE BETWEEN TREES. Apple trees are usually planted too close together. As a general rule they should not be closer than from 30 to 32 feet. Whether to use the square, diagoual or hexa gonal system in planting is purely a matter of individual preference. If one wishes to fertilize heavily and prune severely, keeping his trees headed low and dwarfed as much as possible, the trees may be planted as close as 20 feet, but as a rule this is not advisable. SETTING THE TREE. Having dug a good hole 30 inches wide and 20 inches deep, and put some of the surface soil in the! 3 bottou:, you are ready to plant the tree. Prune off all bruised, broken und dry roots and cut back al' others to four or five Inches in length, making a sloping cut on the bottom of the rout with a sharp knife. Tramp the dirt very firmly with t ie feet, esqieciully in the bot tom of the hole next the roots. Set j the tree two or three inches lower in the nursery row. their earliest con ven icn re, in order that we may enter their interest therein. DR. H. R.
