J " WASTING OF RCA0 MATERIAL Estimated That $9 Out of tvery $10 vieiy squandered Annually In Statea of Corn Belt It would be difficult to give In ac tual ngurea the amount of money that la annually wasted lu road work In the states of the corn bolt. To say la out of every 910 lat uselessly squan dered would be putting It too strongly for some comuiuultlea, but It would not be wide of the mark In others, says taa loava Homestead. Strange a It may aeern, those very localities having the worst roads are sUuchest In their support of the old fashioned sytera whereby the highway are In charge of those who know absolutely nothing about the Bclentlflc construc tion of rood. W are not assuming to give ad vice on how to build roads, because road making is not our profession, but It la sometimes In order to point out bow not to build them. While traveling recently on a highway that hoa almost a nation-wide reputation for its excellent condition due to drag B'ng, w found at one place twenty or thirty teams applying graveL Al ready several miles bad been grav eled, application being made to a surface that waa in many places at least thirty foet wide without the slightest attempt having been made to make a grade. For a distance of many rods In places the center of the highway waa considerably lower than at either side and yet these faith ful "gravelers" were dumping their loade In the very middle of what might be called the "saucer" grade. No attempt whatever waa made to pack down the loose gravel, ao that all truffle waa being diverted to the sides. Heavy traffic following wet spells had resulted In cutting the en tire surface Into well-nigh Impassa ble ruts, the situation therefore pre senting the pleasing prospect of hav ing the ground freeze up this fall with the surface In frightful condi tion. It requires no expert knowledge of road making to conclude at once that labor expended In this way la prac tically wasted. Instead of first get ting rid of the water, which boa al ways been the fundamental principle of road making, and then applying the gravel, those in charge of this road simply because the cash was avail able for putting ao much labor on the surface begun at the wrong end and it may safely be predicted that not two years will elapse before this gravel has disappeared Into a bot tomless bog. Here was an expendi ture of $600 a mile that was In our opinion worse than wasted because this loose unpacked gravel by its di version of traffic to the sides sim ply means that where formerly some good could be accomplished with a drag, now this benefit cannot be ex pected because dragging the soli to the center will only the more quick ly bury the surface material the gravel. While we have given but one In stance we believe that similar esses could be found In a great many coun ties of the corn belt where gravel Is available and If this is true it Is high time that some system la developed whereby every dollar that is spent on a highway must be for labor that la superintended by someone who Is schooled In a practical way on the scientific principles of road making. BETTER ROADS ARE COMING Recant Convention Held at Peoria Oav Powerful Impetua to th Movement In llllnola The recent good roads convention at Peoria gave a powerful Impetua to tha good road movement In llllnola Prospects are that some sort of road legislation will be passed by the leg lslatur this coming winter. Opposition to the hard road move ment will come mainly from two sources. The first Is that class of peo ple who do not trust the state to spend money wisely and economically. They believe that the township or county can uae the road money more effec tively. The second and largest source of opposition Is from the northern part of the state, where the main roads are now pretty thoroughly graveled or macadamised. The people there say with some Justice that after having taxed tbemaelves to build their own roads, they abould not be compelled to help build roada for the reat of the etato. Thla should not block the progress of the good roada movement, however. It should be easily possible to devise a law to provide for an equitable dis tribution of the state road money. In the section which already have mac adamized roads, the money could b pent for concrete pavement on the road where traffic la heaviest As for the first objection, the state. with a force of trained road maker ought to be able to put In permanent roads much better and at leaa cost than the township or county. Expe rience doea not show that misuse of funds Is any more likely to occur un der atate than under county adminis tration. It la Important that the good road question be thoroughly threshed out this fall and winter. We should like to hear from our readers on this sub Ject, and will be glad to give space in the paper to aa many letters as pos sible. Prairie Farmer. Klcklno Habit of Mjl. What a pity It I that grapes will not keep longer. Every autumn I place In a department of my house cellar, where there Is no artificial beat baskets of various varieties of grapes, says a writer In Green's Fruit Grower. I do not expect the Worden, Concord, Delaware and Niagara to keep long, therefore I consume them first After these I consume the Brighton, which Is a fairly good keeper, but which shrivels up considerably. Harry haa kept well with me this season. Gaert ner, a red grape, has kept perfectly up to Thanksgiving. Mills, a block grape with very large compact cluster, is the best keeper ol all that I have tested, being In per feet condition on Thanksgiving day. I bear of many methods of keeping A Good Keeping Variety. grapes through the winter, but I hart never succeeded in doing so In my ordinary fruit room. The grapes must not be placed lu piles in baskets ol boxes. With me- they do the best Is single layers. If one layer la plied on top of another they are Inclined to rot Some people t:ut off portions of the vine with clusters on It and place th ends of the vine In a bottle of water and report good results In keeping the grapes plump and fresh. Others In aert one end of each stem of grape In a bottle of water, but when th water evaporates It must have atten tion, therefore this Is rather an ex pensive method. The Catawba has the reputation of being the best keep er of the hardy notltern grapes. The Catawba and even the Delaware are kept, as I assume in cold storage, and put on the market In western New Tork all through the winter, but I ob serve there is difficulty in keeping even the Catawba In prime condition for the holiday. INSULATOR FOR THE TREES Wood Used Should Be Thoroughly Waterproofed to Prevent Branches From Forming. Part of the telephone lineman's work consists In keeping th wires clear of trees and their branches, which often afford a good ground. The Morse tree Insulator hero shown Is simple and quickly placed on the wire. uiii V I frV 'J ,1 IM I Trea Insulator. says tha Popular Electricity. It Is a rectangular piece of wood that may be placed on a wire by meane of two crosswise grooves deep enough to meet a shallow groove on the face. The wire passes from one crosswise groove along the face groove and out by way of the second groove, the mid dle of the Insulator thua held by the wire bearing against the limb or trea without the use of nails or other fas teners. The wood for the Insulator la thoroughly waterproofed. Quantities of Water. Consider the kind of plant yon ara watering. Soft-stemmed kinds, espe cially those with large leaves, will require much more water than hard wooded, slow-growing kinds. While the former easily recover from drouth, the hard-wooded suffer permanently from extremes. Tba seasons and time of day should also be watched. Plants not In active growth should ba watered sparingly until they have regained thetr foliage. Watering In the evening Just before dark greatly aids fungous diseases, as the foliage remains wet through the night Figure th Coat The orchardlst must figure the value of the land per year on which the ap ples are grown, the cost of pruning, spraying,, cultivating, picking and packing, the cost of the barrel and the cost of delivering the barrel tn full wagon loads at tha nearest railroad station. Cool the Ashe. ' Ashes for fertilizing the grape tins should ba cooled before applying them and then they should be so placed that they will not come In contact with the vine Itself but rather enter tha ground and fertilize tha roots. awwv Aamf Ol ahei iaw Avm ea-ooarx-a to a anu throw tiaaea) a rw. fi a ta tor'-" o-"W f " " a- till 'aa.S -iVCSw I a rTl ' laK Before we tell yon about the boy and hi air rifle, we ' want yon to bear about liggtll Sf Mytr Duke's Mixture the tobacco that thousands of men find "just right" for a pipe the tobacco that makes rolling" popular.
