A atrong plea in favor of phonetlo
spelling waa made to the meeting of
the British Association for the Ad
vancement of Science at Dundee the
other day by Sir Jame Donaldson,
LU D., vice-chancellor and principal
of the University of St. Andrew and
principal of the United College of SL
Salvator and St. !-eonard, says a Lon
don cable dispatch to the New York
Sun. Sir James told the kssoclatlon
that spelling Is a thing of no conse
quence end everybody ought to be
allowed to spell as he likes, just a
Shakespeare and our ancestor did.
Sir Jame said that this plan would
lead to phonetlo spelling. Our present
system of spelling, he told the cl
entlsts, If It csn be called a system.
unique In Its absurdity. The
French, German snd Dutch spell
phonetically, but the English ar ter
ribly behind them.
If the English spelling were pho
netic, said Sir James, it would be
easy for the whole population of
China to learn the English language,
but no foreigners now had a chance
to learn easily. The English speak
ing child taught to spell phonetically,
he said, aved at least a year In th
task of acquiring an education.
Sir James concluded his phonetlo
plea by scoring compositor In gen
eral. The present method of making
p words, he charged, wa the doing
of compositors. "We are slavea of
th printers," he asserted, "knd If
we do not spell according to their
way of thinking they change u over
and over again. And there I no re
dress."
Sir James Is n kuthorlty on the
matter of spelling, being the author
of "The Modern Greek Grammar," as
well as many works on religious sub
jects.
