EXCELLENT RULES GIVEN FOR IMPROVING SWEET CORN SEED Farmers Who are Most Successful Plant Early, Use Plenty of Manure and Hlh Crude Commercial Fertilizer and Keep Plants Clean From Weeds and Thoroughly Cultivated. Prize Winning (By CHARLES D. WOODS General observation shows beyond any question that the farmers who are moat successful with sweet corn, are those who employ the following rules: Plant early, use plenty of ma nure and high grade commercial fer tilizer, keep tbe corn clean from weeda and well cultivated, do not plant too thick, use seed well adjusted to tha locality In which It Is to be grown. The following detailed plan Is drawn up for the guidance of farmers who dealre to Improve their sweet corn seed. First Yeare Work. In the first year'a work towards an Improved strain of teed, only the field selections of plants from which ears are later to be used for planting can b made. These selections should be made of the growing plants in the field. In choosing plants to be saved for seed look out for tha following points In the order named. In going over the field one should provide himself with some strips of cheap bright colored cloth, about 2 feet long and 2 to 3 Inches wide. When a stalk Is select ed to be taved for teed one of these cloths ehoult be tied around It just below the tassel. This marks the Rack for Drying 8weet Corn. This may be made rat and mouse proof by covering top, bottom and sides with wire screen. plant ao that It will be saved when tba rest of the crop Is cut. 1. Whatever other good points a stalk may have do not save It for seed unless It Is conspicuously earlier than the others around It. Thla la most Important. 2. Take only stocky plants with broad leaves bearing good sized, and so far as can be Judged at this stage, well-shaped ears. 3. Take only stalks which ihow the characters which are typical for the variety you are working with. Avoid freaks. Tbe field In which selections are made must obviously be cut by band, so that the marked planta may be left standing to mature their eara. Save about twice as many plants in tba field aa you expect to want eaxj for planting the breeding plot of next year. When the selected planta are well matured (stalks and busks dead and drying) they should be harvested, and the eara should be busked and cared for in tbe following manner. In the winter, after tho eara from these plant! are well dried on the racks, tbe best of tbem should be picked out for shelling and planting. Special at tention should be paid to tbe follow ing points. 1. Take only ears having small well pecked grains In straight rows, and with the gralne set firmly on the cob. Select no ears with fewer than 14 rows (better 16.) 2. Aim to iclect eara of medium size, nearly cylindrical In ahape, and with butt and tip fairly well covered with grain. 8. Test the germination of each ear by taking 25 kernels from the middle of the ear. Reject all ears from which more than two kernels out of the 25 fall to germinate within ten days. Having selected the eara for plant ing shell t'neni, keeping the grain from each ear by Itself In a paper bag. Do COSTLY LESSON IN HAY BALING Farmer Who Had Fifty Acraa tn Grass Cut it Too Soon Better to Feed to Animals. (Hy R. A. OI.M8TEAD.) One of my neighbors learned a les ion In bay baling this year. He bad never been a hay farmer until last year when he put In a crop of timothy ed top mixed. He cut a pretty fair ;?op In July but he waa io eager to fet at the new work that be cut It a little too toon. He hat about CO icrei In graft and concluded te bale ihe crop and ecll It I euggested that le ought to stack It and let It itnnd it least tlx week! for cutting before nllng It, but the hay looked pretty Iry and he concluded to haul it direct !rom the cocks to the baler. It looked rery nice aa It came out of the baler ind our neighbor stacked it all up Area tiers deep. Of course tba bulk of the hay tpolled t .j : Seed Eara. not save the kernels from the butt and tip, lay for about Inch fro a each end. Each ear selected, should be given a number. Tblt number ma) be written on a slip of paper and pul In the bag with the shelled seed. Second's Year's Work. The corn should be planted eact year In two plots, one the breeding plot and tbe other the propagation plot. In planting the corn for seed use the best corn land you bave, and manure and fertilize It well. Plant the rowa 3 feet apart and tbe'hllli 18 lncbea apart In the row. Plant 4 kernels to tbe hill and thin to leav the two best stalks standing In tb bill. Give tbe plots the best cultiva tion you can. In the breeding plot should b( planted tbe selected ears. Each eat should be planted In one row by It self. (This Is called the ear-to-row system.) The rows should be giver the number borne by the ear planted In It. Careful observation should b made throughout tbe season. Eacb row should be harvested separately Its yield determined and the ears from It kept separate from the ears froir all other rows. Tbe seed from the best rows, tbos showing greatest earllness and high est yield of good quality corn and sto ver, should be used to plant the propa gatlon plot the third year. Reject aU nubbins and poor ears. In the propagation plot of this yeai plant the good ears from the prevloui year selection which were not used In the breeding plot. It Is desirable though not absolutely necessary In the propagation plot to detassel every alternate. Detasseling Is done by pull ing out and throwing away the tasse' (spindle) aa soon as It appears. The ears from the detasseled rows are tc be regarded as the best seed, and those from the rowa where the tasseli were not removed as second best Tbt two classes should be harvested and cured separately. Seed from the do tasseled rows will probably be found to yield better than that from the oth ers. Just as In the previous year the best Individual plants from both the breed lng and propagation plots should bt marked with clothes and saved sepa rately to furnlBh seed for the follow ing year's ear-to-row breeding plot Third and Succeeding Year'! Work. Plant on the ear-to-row system, th Individual earl selected the prevloui year In the breeding plot. In the pro pagatlon plot plant seed from th best rows of the preceding year. Ie the propagation plot detassel ever) alternate row. The seed from the do tasseled row will be the best seed From your Individual plant selections take the seed for the following year'i breeding plot. Strong Cholera Serum. Farmers are now storing their prod uct for future use. This is easily pos sible, and until the scourge, io disas trous laat year, le stamped out, n( cbancea should be taken. If last yeai a large supply of hog cholera serum had been available, it la reaaonabl to suppose that comparatively little damage would have been done. Gov ernment aa well aa private planti were wholly inadequate to meet th demand of 1911. and as a consequent hog cholera losses were unprecedent ed. Scientists are convinced thai properly stored heg cholera serurr. will keep for three or four yeara. Thl being true, there ought to be little complaint hereafter should cbolert bieak out. Rotation of Crops. If we use but one crop on the land and cultivate it clean all the time the soil will quickly be robbed of Its hu mus; therefore we must follow a proper rotation in order to supply humus, without which we can do lit tle. Some men have never discovered thla fact, however. and It will be a total loss. I never think of bating timothy hay on my place until it has gone through a sweat and Is practically cured, there fore, I stopped selling baled bay sev eral years ago because I discovered that it paid much better to feed the hay to make beef and obtain manure to put back on the land to raise more hay. Thla season I cut an average of three tons of timothy on 40 acres and It was aa fine hay as I ever saw. Some of the neighbors who are hay sellers got only on an average of two tons and they do not seem to under stand where the trouble is. Origin ally their land was as good as mine but they bave jet to learn that they cannot keep on selling off their bay cropa without puttlag anything back on the land. The Calf Pasture , Calvea ought to have a separate pas ture, and one In good clean order. They cannot thrive on short or soiled grasu, nor hold their own In pastures with older animals, as the latter will monopolize tbein or take tba choice portions. Jiff W. L.
