The employers favor a cut In pay for carpenters, mason tenders, elec tricians, painters, metal workers and common laborers. It is believed that Marly every union In the city will fbt any reduction of wage. The Process That Begin When the Two Are Mixed. It 1 not correct to say that salt dis solves Ice, Biuce real solution only takes ploce when a solid, liquid or gas la dissolved In a liquid. The true explanation of the fact that Ice melts when common salt Is ncMl to It depends upon the simple physical principle that when a salt is dissolved In wnter heat Is absorbed and Its tem perature is lowered. When salt and Ice are mixed together some of the salt dl' solves tn the small amount of wa ter which Is always present, the tem perature is thereby lowered, and a new freezing point Is established. The reranlnder of the Ice. being at a temperature lilslier thnn this now freezing point, slowly melts, and more silt i" dissolved until the solution Is st'tir: :e'l The teuier;itnre c;in in this wsiy I e i.nveivd to 22 decrees ()., w hich Is tUe freezing point of a definite com pound of salt and water. The suits dissolved in sen wuter Servo a very Important purpose, us It re juires a grenter degree of cold to cause tiie formation of Ice on them than on fresh water.
