Ono subject In which th arm-ago householder has a vital Interest la tho high cost of living. Much has been written and spoken about tho ever growlg expenne of the American household, but tho blame for tho con dition which seems to prevail all over tho country has not yet been fixed. President Taft propobes to do thla, and one of the most timely subjects be has discussed recently Is this iam problem. President Taft proposes to appoint a commission, consisting of expert, to carry on an Inventisatlon as to why food price are steadily going skyward. The middleman is be ing freely blamed because It seems to cobt more each year to live and many believe the charge well founded. Preldent Taft'a proposed commission would ascertain thl fact accurately, and the causes once learned. It Is thought the problem could be solved. President Taft himself say of the plan: "One lesitlmate advantage of such an official Investigation and re port. Is the enlightened and Informed public opinion, which of Itself, will often Induce cr compel the reform of unjunt conditions or the abatement of unreasonable demands." Louis Fluhrer, the leading mer chant of Mayger, was in St. Helens last Saturday and while here filed his declaration of intention w ith the County Clerk of becoming a candidate fo tha democratic nomination for I County Commiasioner. Mr. Fluhr- cr is a large property owner of the lower county and is well known all over the county.
