THE SEPTIC TANK ON THE FARM Mv II. . Hru.l.ler. l'r..fm..r of Amn.ny. Oro ' An ruultural (JoIUkv. (rvHlli. One of the greatest attractions of farm life ia ita heathfulntsa. This is due more largely, however, to nature's beneficence than to man's precautions. One of the most common aourcea of aerioua ill health and physical discom fort on the farm may be found in sew age accumulation. Whether it be the kitchen slops and wash water thrown from the door, the animal manures under the eaves of the burn, or the more dangerous hu man excreta beneath the outhouse all are the cause of foul odors, the breed ing of flies, the pollution of aoil and water, and the spread of disease. Human excreta, narticulurlv (mm diseased persona, is by far the most dangerous form of sewage. Annual ly, inousanda or deatha from typhoid alone may be traced to this source. The most common means of diHrumal of this form of farm and country sew uge. the nrivv. is nerha ns the mrmt unsanitary that could be devised. Kven the dry earth closet, though less dangerous, is unpleasant and burden some to attend. Cesspoolii must be rV . : l' u . : i r3 k .. . 1 --pz """" !iir:i.riiiirti;r 't'l't'i'i'i'iMx 1 1 A JL. 1 I 1 Lnnq- 'uti nol ycc frequently emptied, and cesspools and dry wells alike, soon clog up and pol lute the surrounding soil, eventually establishing percolation channels which lead into the country ground water, carrying impurities to the sources of domestic supply. Neither cesspool nor dry well are feasible in heavy clay sub-soils, yet in gravel sub-soils they more cjuickly distribute contamination to the country water. Nor is the emptying of sewage into creeks an entirely successful disposi tion of the matter, for this very com monly merely carries impurities and disc Hue to the district below. Hence the satisfactory disposal of farm sewage has been for long, a most vexing problem. Until the con ception of the septic tank idea, no permanently sanitary and economical method of disposal was known. By giving nature proper assistance, the septic tank enables the farmer to com pletely and inexpensively dispose of all household and human waste pro duct, destroying their disease-carrying power as well as ridding the farm stead of its most discomforting fea ture. The septic tank is a simple concrete receptacle built under the ground sur face, into and through which the sew age slowly passes and is transformed through bacterial action into a practi cally harmless liquid. The exclusion of sunlight and air from the sewage chamber causes a great army of saphrophytic vegetable organisms, the anaerobic bacteria, to attack the waste animal and plant matter of the sewage, from the de compoaition of which these minute organisms must obtain their necessary oxygen. Ordinarily In less than twenty-four hours these bacteria will break down over fifty per cent of the organic solids of the sewage, trans forming the offensive matter largely into carbon dioxide gas and leaving traces of nitrates, potash, ammonia, and marsh gas in the water remain ing. In this process the disease (Terms are destroyed as well. . The outflow from the tank almost clear, practically odorless and harmless- may be used for irrigation or ois charged into a water course where sunlight and soil complete its purifi cation. The septic tank offers a highly sat isfactory means of disposing of the farmhouse sewage In a sanitary way, the aewage entering the tank being decomposed and purified by bacterial Simple Test. The tank may be placed at any distance desired from the houes. aa if constructed of concrete with man-hole and concrete cover as shown, it is practically air-tight and odorless. i ne size oi me tank should be such as would permit a sewage capacity of aoout tour cubic feet per person, closet, kitchen, bath and wash-room waste all being included in this allow ance. The tank shown in the drawing (inside measurement: width, 36 inch es; height to water line, 38 inches; length of inlet chamber, 36 inches; length of outlet chamber, 24 inches) has a aewage capacity of about 45 cubic feet, hence ia of about the right capacity for a family of ten or twelve persons, or for several small families living in adjoining houses. The wooden forms for the walls are set in a pit of the proper size and thoroughly mixed concrete poured in, making the outside wall 6 inches thick, and the partition wall 8 inches. Fire brick are laid without mortar on the base of the partition wall, one-fourth inch spaces left between the edges of the brick. On top of this brick screen, consisting of eight layers of brick laid on their flat sides, the con crete partition wall is completed. The DtilGN or 6CPTIC TANk v.Vi s i . . -j Di Mon M all C lni r r lall lion inlet and outlet pipes (4-incb sewer : tile with cemented joints) should be on the same level and turned down, as shown, inside, so that their discharge will not disturb the mass of organ isms at the surface of the tank con tents, and also so as to prevent the en trance of air to the tank or the return of sewage gas to the house. The tank should be connected to the waste pipes of th house by 4-inch sewer tile with ' cemented joints. This inlet tile line should have a fall of not more nor less that 1 inch per foot. The plumbing of the house, of course, should be : modern in ever respect, with the cus tomary traps and clean-outs. The out let tile to dispose of the waste water of the tank should be ordinary drain ' tile with about one-eighth inch spaces left between the ends in laying them. I This drain tile should lead to a ravine or dry ditch where the waste water, ' which is odorless and clean, can seep away into the ground. A screen l should be placed over the exposed end ' of the outlet to prevent the entrance of small aimals. Of course, if the soil through which the outlet line is j run is sandy and porous, the waste water will seep into the ground through tie joints of the tile within one or two hundred feet, depending upon the porosity of the soil. In such 1 caes, the outlet into a ditch would ' not be necessary. I Where an outlet ditch is not availa ble, the drain may lead into a pre pared sand or gravel well at a dis tance of two or three hundred feet i from the septic tank. The fall of the outlet tile should be about the same aa ; the inlet, one inch per foot, where ! leading through a very sandy soil. It 1 may be much less where the soil is heavier and seepage along the tile line I is not depended upon. No strong antiseptics, such as chloride of lime or carbolic acid, should be allowed to enter the sewage in other than very small quantities, as they might destroy the organisms that bring about decomposition. The scum of organisms on the surface of the aewage in the tank should not be dis turbed. About once year the tank should be examined and cleaned, if necessary, but this seldom need be done. The materials required for building the tank shown are: Gravel, 2 yards; aand. vard: cement. 4 barrels; 60 firebrick, sewer pipe and drain tile; old lumber for forms. The cost of ma terial and labor ranges from $25 to $30.
