Legal notices 25 cents per line, County Official Paper 1 he court decided that the in itiative ordinance passed pro hibiting stock from running at large in the City of St Helens was so faulty as not to be effec . tive, and so at the meeting of the council last Monday another or dinance covering the same ground and improved in many ways was passed by the council. This was the only right thing for the members of the council to do. At the recent election when this matter was put to a vote the ex pression of public opinion was so plain that there was no room for doubt as to the desire of the ma jority not to have our streets used as a cow pasture. The or dinance that was in effect needed fixing, and the one now on the books is far better than it was. But the main object is to set aside at least the principal streets of the city from the range, of which there are hundreds of acres unfenced within a short distance of town. middle west." While there have been half a dozen so called land show enter prises in the field, all claiming for their object the exploitation of the west and northwest, the communities of the northwest have stood almost solidly behind the show to be held in St. Paul because it is really their own show. Different from any other land show the exhibition of west ern products to be given in St. Faul is one which the commer cial club and transportation com panies of the northwest have planned and on which private interests stand any chance of making a cent. The large timount of space in the show has been sold at such a small expense that the management is in a position to spend $10, 000 enterprise to get people to attend and see the exhibits. j Week's Granite Co. j MONUMENTS Lowest Prices in Portland Design by Mail T I 301 Fourth St., Comr of Colui Ki'prwu'iitvd by EARL PERRY asbia I i DRESSMAKING and TAILORING i j o-s""ss-ss-a SUMMONS i 1 The eyes of the world are now on the inhabitants of the Flower Kingdom anil the sympa thy of all is with them in their attempt to overthrow the Manchu dynasty. The present uprising is far different from the many attempts at resistance made in the different provinces in the past, and seems to be the res"ult of well layed plans by the mem bers of the progressives of the empire, and being well financed there is hope that it will meet with success. For nerve the two boys that tried to swear away the life of the Swedish sailor HolmBerg seem to have it on anything even in this section. The $5000 re ward offered for the apprehen sion of the murderer of the Hill family looked big, and the young hobos were not at all particular about how they got it, even be ing willing to aacrifice their only friend. Perhaps the growth' and pro gress made in this town in the past few years is as well il lustrated in the methods used by the merchants in delivering their goods as in any other way. Seven years ago John Winters and his wheelbarrow was the city ex press and delivery, and while one or two of the stores also had wheelbarrows, they did not do much delivering, and Winters wa3 the main stay in the de- ivery line. More often than otherwise, if you wanted a sack of flower, the only way to get it was to pack it home. Now all of the stores are up to date in their memous ana go out to solicit or ders and have good deliveries, while one of them is now using an auto truck for that purpose. Two new chairs have been added during the past year in highway en gineering and rural economies. It will pay, and pay well, for our young people to write Presi dent Kerr. 0. A. C, Corvallis, Ore., for informrtion about the short courses. Farmer's son es pecially should attend. This is an age of scientific farm opera tions. Get out of the old rut and learn what the college has to offer. The correspondence course of business methods is proving itself most valuable and farmers have only to write the same source for information on this subject.
