County Official Paper The Republican County Cen tral Committee met here last Tuesday. Thing's are warminn up for the 1912 scrap, and the glad hand will soon be going around, By the first of the year it will be an easy matter to tell a man who is running for office. NO DOUBT OF IT Tuesday's Oregonian contained the following reference to the electric line to be built in this city: "The Council of St. Helens is considering a franchise for a street railway that will in time extend to Houlton. That little line will be the beginning of a system that will develop Colum bia County, for she has resources that equal any in the state." Certainly this county has re sources that equal any in the state. This section is wonder fully rich in natural resources. That this line will be the first of a system of lines there is of course no doubt, but the ques tion of moment right now is. When will all this come to pass? This country has made great Bteps in the past few years, and will in the next few, but it is still a long way from what it will be when there is an electric road paralleling the river the full length of the county. The build ing of the road here will start the advancement in this direc tion, and may advance the de velopment of the county by several years, so while the city council is right in not granting the franchise the way it wa3 first brought to their attention, still it is to be hoped that a reasonable compromise will be arrived at. and the electric line not be kept out of the city.
