Thompson-Wilkins Ml" Malile Thompson, of Houlton, in his possession live years and he has m t made a journey on her, according to Ciiptain Lawrence llolman, his son. The record is remarkable is steam boating circles and probably no other mill in the marine community cat) evualit. The reason is that Mr. llol man end of the line and bis attention being demanded in the management of orlice details, he found no time for pleasure jaunts. I'esides work in the territory covered by the steamers has ben assigned to representatives, who have been held responsible for the trade handled, and there has been little oc casion for the head of the company to give details bis personal attention other thin at Portland. Of late years his eon, Captain Law rence H iJmen and Kaymoml Holmun, have taken an active part in the busi ness and during a recent visit of Mr. Holman to Kuiope they shouldered the entire determined to make improve ments In the service through the re building of the steamer Ameiica, milk ing her hull about one-third lot ger and with less draft, arid it is estima'ed that with her present engine and lioiler she can steam from lo to ! miles, against ll miles that fhe reels Joff at present. When she is rebuilt and replaced on the run passenger rates will be lowered to 23 rents, against 50 cents charged at present to St. Helens and vieinity. LOST One male bull pup, briivlle and white, whitehead, except black spot on side of nose. Ansaers to the name of (.runty. $o reward for return to Mr. Cohine at the St. Helens Quarry Co. Sheriff Files Complaint Theie has been no development in the Wehrman murder ca"e dui ing the past week, except the filing of the complaint charging Pender with the deed. This Sheriff Thompson waa forced to do from fear of habeas corpus proceedings. The preliminary heating will be, had, in the court of Justice of the Peace M. F. Hazen at some date in the near future. The Sheriff says that his chain of circum stantial evidence is becoming stronger every day, and expres-es himself with confidence as to the guilt of the accused, saving that if the trial was at once there is enough evidence in the hands of the authorities to obtain a conviction. FOR SALK January pullets now lay- Miss Phillips and her small pupils are very comfortably situated at the City Hall. There are about 33 pupils in Mia Phillip's room. The second an I third grades, taught by Miss Hazen, number over 40. Miss liazen has some thing to do. Miss Farnum, who has charge of the fourth and fifth grades, reports full at tendance in her room. Miss Weed teachir of tbe sixth and seventh grades, like all the other teachers has a large number in attend ance. The total enr illment to date, is about 170, and there are a number Of others who will enter within the next week. .So far, twenty pupils have registered in the high school. This is indeed, ery encouraging. At the beginning of an other year, this num)er can easily be doubled. The high school boys expect to go to Rain er Saturday for a game of ball with the H tinier H gh School boys. While the Rainier boys are older, we expect to make it interesting for them. On .ii Saturday fallowing. Rainier will give us a return game. Following is the line np: Catcher. Vergil Hattan; Pitcher, Harry Richardson; First base, Lester Wellington, Second. Matt McKie, Third, Cbas. Smith; Left field, Berlin Yeo nian; renter, Ziuna Lemon; right, Knute Bgorkman. Archie Rowley, whose foot was badly crushed two months ago, is now able to walk on crutches and has entered the fifth grade. There are cot many new faces to be seen among the pupils this year, except in Miss Phillips room, where nearly all are beginners. The people of Saint Helens do not seem to be a transient class as in many towns along the Col. unibia. t In the near future the pupils of. the upper grades expect to engage in a con test in "Domestic Art," and no doubt the result of the contest will be the dis covery of some excellent cooks. Mr. Wllkers in has hid perfect atteo dnce in his room thus far. Every seat is occupied, but there is room for others and they will be placed as new pupils enter. 4- Our school building is in icg. ileat laying strains, cheap if taken-filial commands, perhaps, nt once. Address Mrs. J. B. Thayer, Columbia City, Oregon. Boys Waive Preliminary Henry Tieaver and Jake Rassmussen, charged with larceny, having tried to hold up Mis.
