As to mar , rbige, the affianced pair could at that time choose between two different le gal family renlmes; marriage with ma nua, the older form, In which all the goods of the wife passed to the owner ship of the husband, so that she could no longer possess anything In her own name; or marriage without manus. In which only the dower became the prop erty of the husband, and the wife , remained mistress of all her other belongings and all that she might ac quire. Except In some cases, and for spec ial reasons, In all the fumilles of the aristocracy, by common consent, mar riages, during U,9 ttMt centuries of the republic, were contracted In the later form; so thRt at the time mar ried women directly and openly had gained economic Independence. Origin of the Semaphore. From the earliest times and among savage nations beacon fires and In terrupted columns of smoke have been used to give warning of the approach of an enemy or the news of victory or defeat. Signalling by combinations of flags Is another early method, and Is still used at ana. However, It was not until 1796, when Lord George Mur ray Introduced his semaphore system, that anything like an efficient meane of telegraphic communication was es tablished. The admiralty at the time, seeing the advantages of such a sys tem, caused semaphore stations to be establlnhed on all the highest points irom lxinn on to Dover. Deal, and Portsmouth. Bo effectual waa the sys tem that a message could be. In favor able circumstances, transmitted from Iindnn to Deal, Dover to Portsmouth, and a reply received back In London In seven and a half minutes. The op eration was performed by three men In each station, two of whom were on the lookout, while the third waa em ployed In working the six shutters, which were placed over the building In two vertical frames In such a way that 63 distinct signals could be formed. The Order of the Bath. The Most Honorable Order of the Hath Is one of the best known of Eng lish distinctions. It had lta origin 1q the ceremonial bathing anciently re - quired aa symbolic of purity at the Inauguration of a knight. The order of knighthood wag Instituted by Henry IV. at his coronation, when he made 66 esquires Into knights. The order was at flrxt purely a military one, and the distinction was conferred by the sovereign from time to time at great ceremonials. Charles II. Invested 68 Knights of the Path at hi corona tion. After that the custom seemed to fall Into desnetude. In the year 1725 George I. revived the order as a mili tary body with the monarch as sov ereign, a prince of the blood royal as grand master, and 36 knights. The order wr.s extended In 1847 to em brace civilians on whom It was de sired to confer distinction. The In signia of the order Includes a gnld collar and badge, a crimson silk rib bon and star, also a mantle surcoat, under habita, and cap. Garmenta of Fishes' Skins. Among the unique and wonderthl garmenta worn at the prerent day are the curious fish skin dresses of the wealthy women of the Gold tribe. liv ing along the Amur river. East Siberia. Though they can neither read nor write, yet these people are producing astonishing ornaments, designs and embroidery work. The dress is com posed of several layers of fluh-skln, the undermost representing the skin of the garment proper, the uppermost showing the ornaments of their cut out forma, lietween these two lay ers la Inserted a middle layer, which serves as a background, throwing out distinctly all parts of the ornaments. The pieces of flsh-skln forming the ornaments are generally colored blue. The front and back of the dress Is ndomed with thece cut-out pieces of flHh skin, sewed with fish skin thread Mount Etna. Mount Etna Is one of the great vol ennoes of the north. It Is great In size, great In activity, great In beauty In slie It would cover the entire me tropolltan counties. As to Its power, one of these eruptions some centuries ago killed eighty thousand people, which Is probably more than Vesuvius has ever done In all lt ex istence aa a volcano, not excepting the great eruption of 79 A. D., which des troyed the cltlea of Herculaneum and Pompeii. As to its beauty, this Is also very dlflfcnlt to describe. It Is teeming with nlmal nd table, and l enow covered one-half the year; the other half. It la bare to Its very summit Fumigating the Sick Room. It would be interesting if somebody would calculae how much it has cost Uncle Sam to perform his presumed obligations as guarantor of the Mon roe Doctrine. In 1898 he fought a war, "freed" Cuba, and acquired various colonial liabilities. That war introduced him into the first circles of world powers, and the effort to travel in such society has kept his household sxpenses steadily advancing until now they exceed a billion a year. Before the Spanish war, a billion biennially was supposed to be scandalously high. To mention just a few cases, the Monroe theory nearly embroiled us in a war with Great Britain; it made as the financial guarantors of Santo Domingo; and the same of Venexuela; t forced us to drive the dictator Zel iya out of Nicaragua; it has re :tntly involved us in a general compli cation of Central American affairs; ind finally, it brought about the mo bilization of great American army n the borders of Mexico, as a warn ing to that country that it must be Success Magaxine.
