Columbia County Abstract

Last week's Review tells the
Mist where we made a mistake
in saying that the Sch. Hyman
u. f oster tooK ner entire cargo
at this port, and we are willing
to own up. The Foster as we
have learned loaded partly at
Rainier, and we are glad of it.
But this week it is the Review
man that has been misinformed
and in justice to the county of
ficers here who are not lax in the
preformance of their duty we
feel bound to call attention to the
following extract from theleadins:
editorial in last week's Review:
" A man has been accused of
crimes so base, so infinitely be-!
neath the standard of human, I
yes, bestial society, that clear
mention of them cannot be made.
The man was in the city a day
after this thing became public.
The City and County offiicials
were notified and on the ground.
The man left and his wherea
bouts is unknown. The Review
cannot place the blame but would
ike to pee jt placed and placed
hard."
The placing of the blame for
the escape of this man seems to
us to be the easiest thing in the
world. There is a justice machine
in Rainier, and there are officers
to enforce the law. The state
ment that the county officers
were notified and on the grounds
needs a little explaining. The
common belief, and it is supposed
by the facts, i3 that the man
accused left Rainier on Wednes
day. The District Attorney here
was notified by telephone on that
day in time to catch the train for
Rainier in the evening, and went
to that place and investigated so
far as was in his power, but it
was after the man had left
Rain ier.
il And there was no warrant

get this man.
So that is the extent of the
county officers being on the
ground. Why was the warrant
not sworn out at once upon the
commission of the crimes becom
ing known? With the Review,
we would like to see the blame,
if their is anyone except the com
plainant to blame for the man's
