Found On Deer IaUnd eund bar one ifaeoline boat named Red Ievil, owner will find Biiuie at Coinieln Landing, Mr. A. Tracy Roy Craig, the popular young barber of this place, and George hhysumn are the original life pa vera. The following appeared In the Oregonian of last Tile! day; "George Shysmiin and Uoy Craig saved three foreigners from drowning in the Columbia River here early this morning, after the trio had overturned their boat in a drunken attempt to row across the river. The men rescued were gill net fishermen. Though it was not yet daylight Shysman and Craig put out to the capsized men's aid in response to their cries, in a row boat. The men were clinging to the overturned bat and in the darkness, Shysman, who was the only one able to swim, leaped from the boat and attached a line to the cap sized craft. One of the trio who became exhausted loosed his hold on the boat and was carried down stream. Shys man swam after him and pulled him ashore, while Craig towed the upset bout with the two men clinging to it to the landing." The facts of the matter are as follows; The two boys went down to the dock At about twelve o'clock Saturday night, and found two fisher men sitting there, talking about their two friends who were in the water. The boys got busy at once, lit a lantern that the men on the dock had, and f mod that in getting into their skiff the men had turned it over, and though both were holding on o it, they were in grave danger of drowning. One of them could be reached (run I Ite slip and was pulled out, while the other, who was holding to the stern of tl e boat, was about all in, and Shysman climbed along one of the stringers, and stood on the upturned boat while be parsed a line around the llatierti.au. He was then pulled to stfety. Craig's picture accompanied the article in the Oregonian. SOME BALL GAME C. W. Hodsou of Portland who recently rttun: d from an ex. tended trip thrxnitfh the Kastern States, in an interview in the Portland Telegram, has the following to say reardin the results of the extensive adver tising Oregon and particularly Portland, have been doing since the Lewis and Clark Fair. 'Kat'ru people are more interested in Oregon in general and Portland in par ticular than 1 ever have found them be fore and our hank clearances and build ing porniiU have convinced them that Cortland is the most prosperous City in the country. "This time I took with m Nterooptiinn pictures of Oregon and gave a little lec ture liefore three commercial iKidica and had Invitations to Ht-ak at adoen i lues. I spoke before the Clevclcud Ad Club, j the Indlaimpixdis Commercial Club, the Ad-Scrips and liefore the suprenc council of U. C. T. of A. Payton and rittstuug requested nie to deliver my talk among other places, but time did not permit. I was astonished at the amount of in formation that Kastcrners have iilxiut this city and state. "There peared no limit to the anouut of data the KaHtorners wanted about Portland Formerly they have tweu talking Seattle, hut now it is all Portland ami they all know more about this place, llusiness men, pir ticulary, have watchrfb the progress of the citv aa evidenced through the building permits and bank clearances and con sider this the most thriving citv in the t'nited States. Every day evidences of the fact that this advertising cam paign has been far reaching in its scope and immensly beneficial to the state in general, is becom ing more apparent to the close observer of the progress and phenominal development of the j northwest. 1 That the development of Ore. j has sulfered in the past through a lack of proper advertising is a fact which cannot be denied. However the results leing ob-, tained, and the benefits being derived from the recently started ; advertising campaign should act as a stimulus to further efforts I on the part of the different com-. mercial bodies throughout the state. We have seen the phenominal : growth of our neighboring state resulting from the policies of exploitation inaugurated by that great empire builder, Jas. J. Hill and carried out by the progress ive commercial bodies of that state to such an extent as to arouse the admiration of all. That the state of Oregon po sesses unuevelopeu resou rces second to no other state in the northwest is a fact that cannot be denied. To follow up the work already started should be he object and earnest endeavor of every citizen of the state. Y. The ball frame of the season a doubttdly the one played on the Kainiur grnutids last Thursday, when the busi ness men of this city and Rainier went to the mat. The local nine left here at about 12:30 on the eventful day ami on board the Klamath, Jr., with Capta'n Blakesley in charge. The business houses o( Rainier all closed to celebrate and when the game started despite the mosquitoes, there was a goodly crowd in the bleachers and giandstand, though most of them had fir bought to keep away the winged pirates. Wilde was on the mound for the home team and the things that he did to us will hardly bear telling. The tint Inning and in fact the first eight Innings we were blanked, while in the llrnl chapter the visitors got four runs and not a hit to their credit. Morton threw a good game and the hits were few and far between, but the support given him was pretty ragged at critical moments. After the first the Kainler men secured four more making a total of eight, while there was nothing doing for as until the lant half of the ninth chapter Attorney M. H. Miller poked out single with two out, Morton followed with one ot the same kind, advancing Miller to third and taking second on Ihe first ball pitched, and then the thing happened that makes us feel glad that A E. Thompson moved from Clntskanie to this place. He swung at that ball with the prctticMt movement that ever was made, and it did not stop until it went gainst the left field fence and two runs bad crossed the plate, and ire were iivtd from ibut oat. Elmore C- Jordan, a locomtive engineer on the Ijos Angeles di vision of the Southern Pacific Company, has recently received patent on a new device for the filling of Iuhricators upon loco motives by means of compressed air. The device is extremely; jA simple unu jjruvioes a means oy j y', which the central reservoir of, i'dit the lubricator can be filled at any time while the engine is hot, and without any waste of lubri cating oil or any danger to the operator from leaking valves, an I arrangement greatly appreciated j by the engineers on the long, , straight-away runs on the South- P era Pacific. At the time Jordan completed his invention he brought it to the attention of the Southern Pacific officials and throunh them patent letters were granted. It was experimented with upon the huge Mallet loco motives of the Southern Pacific Company and later pronounced practically a necessity on account of the location of the lubricators on these engines, since these lubricators are so high on the boiler head and difficult to fill. With Jordan's invention the lubricators can be filled while the engine is in motion without tak ing the usual necessary time to cool the lubricator. It is being used on all locomotives of tin Harriman Lines and will un doubtedly soon be taken up by many other railroads. j R t St. Helens Estimate. Furnished.
