zen between eighteen and forty-
five years of age is enrolled as a
soldier of the United States, un
der compulsion to serve if called
upon in time of war.
By the new system, copied
partly from Prussia and partly
from Great Britain, there are
now approximately 16,000,000
men liable for field duty under
control of the war department
These are divided by law into
three "lines" The first line
comprises about 78,000 regular
soldiers, who may be increased
by enlistment to 100.000. The
second is the national guard.

The new bridge is what is
known as the Strauss trunnion
type, differing from the Bascule
bridge of the Salt Lake Railroad,
also at San Pedro, in . that the
latter is lifted on a rocker, while
the Southern Pacific bridc-e will
be lifted on a tail pin or hinge.
It is also to be double tracked.
A latch operated by a motor will
hold the bridge in place when it
is down. This new bridge will
replace the present Soiifhom
