OUR PORTLAND LETTER rortlaml, Or., July 1 Through the I'aiirie northwest July lias begun with almost no lotts by forest fires so far ami with conditions uusually favorable for prevention, according to the monthly bulletin of the Wenern Forestry & Con starvation issued toluy after the receipt of reports from practically all ptlvate, state and federal protective agencies Slashing fires were numerous in June but were prevented from entering green timber. Windspread rain at the clo-e o( the mouth extinguished tuiouldering Ores and premit preparation to meet the inevitable dry spell to follow. Idaho is reported iu particularly good condition . There ha been no loss ex cept of a few cut logs. The timber owners' fire associations and the forest service have pushed work on trail and telephone building to assift their patrols. Railroads and loggers have taken extraordinary precautions. Tbe chief complaint is that settlers are nut complying with the law requiring per mits to burn slashing and that in road building too much material is fallen in to the adioininif woods to lecoine a menace a hen dry. Washington his had many sharp nd s few bridges and cut logs have been lost, but fire has been kept out of green timber and much good was accomplished by the removal of about 40,000 acres of dangerous looing debris. The states lias bad 23 regular wards in the field, lie- sides day labor employed by them. The Washington Forest Fire Association had 80 wardens in June and is adding more, besides purchasing several new track bicycles for railroad patrol. On the whole, all classes are more careful with fire than in previous years. The chief exceptions to this are reported to lie in improperly cleored riglits-of-wny and in the negligence of a few logging operators to extinguish slashing lite completely. Oregon has also had slashing fire which caused syme alarm, but they were bandied promply by the wardens. Over 100 patrolman have been put in the field already by private owners and the State forester ha appointed 17 district wardens. The Oregon Forest Associa tion has organized three new coopera tive patrol in Jackson, Columbia aud Clatsop coun ics. Lightning and brush burning caused a few fires in Mont ma but as elsewhere, improved patrol service effected their prompt extingiit htnent. The Northern Montana Fotentry Association has or ganized a pew patrol covering Flathead aud Lincoln counties with headquarters at Kaliieli. The Association xiintg out, however that although toinlitions have been for tunate so for, and extraordinary effort Is being made by ail ofllcial and private protective organizations, dry hot weath er is soon due. Success in avoiding dis tress like that of 1910 depends tnninly upon the care taken by campers, settlers and loggers, and particularly upon ex tinguishment to incipient fires so tliev will not cmoulJer and break out later whan they cannot be controlled. Pioneers are interested in the) pur j chase of ten acres adjoining the site of the pioneer monument at Chnmpoeg to add Vi the three acre already held there making a state park. A fund will be raised for the purpose by subscription and the Legislature will be asked at the next session to repay the money advanced. An interesting contest closed In Port land during the past week when the Y. M. C. A. distributed prize to chool boys who grew vegetable on back lots. An exhibit of the prize vegetable Wa made and the competition created great dital of interest. About 2 school children entered and the showing was creditable one. l'hysician of the state meet in annual convention In Portland July 10 12 and the gathering will be held In the Commercial Club Convention Hull. A feature of the meeting will be the attendance ot a large number of East ern practitoners who will ttop in Port land on their way home from the American Medical Association conven tion held In Los Angeles this week. A "get-together" eicttnlon from Bend, south to Klamath Falls, Ijikeview, Paisley and other cities of Houth-Cen- tral Oregon wa a pleasant event of thtl put WMk la the Interior. The trip m ' made In automobiles from Uend and nnnilier uf Portland people, Including n Ptllcial of the Ot gn development League, went along. A better feeling was established and better knowledge guiued of the country visited. - , The member otlie tenui club have been going out to their new grounds pretty regular for practice and have two good court Iu shape. Mis Pearl McImuiel.H andC. A. Gilki son were united iu marriage at the resi dence of J. W. Iay on Monday hist by Kev. A. A. Heist, and Mabel Ilulimun and A tig Hat E. Johnson shared the same fate during the past week, Kev. Van Marter olllclatlng. Licence have also lieeu issued from the olllce of County Clerk H. K. La fare for the marriage of Anna Johnson and Win. Carlson, of Qutucy; L)la llattes and F.d ward Coles of Rainier: and Katie Pclto and Otto Itunsko. of Mayger. EXPERIMENT FARM TO HELP Portland, Ore., July 4 (Spectal)-Gret benefit is expected to result to Interior Oregon from the selection during the pust w eek uf an experiment stutioti site in Huruey Count) near Hums. Tbe lo cation wa picked by expert from the Oregon Agricultural College and a tract of ltM) acre was (elected. A capable man from the college will be put In chatge and soil problem of the interior will be solved. Proper dry farming methods will be shown and the station will serve as a nucleus for a number of other experimental farms throughout Harney County. Later it is hoped others will be established in Kuatern Oregon. A new industry ha been started near (ircshaiu, where a Japanete woman hits a thriving colouy of silk worms that she has raised from imported cwootis this spring. The worms are now spinning their silk and will soon develop to the butterfly stage. September 1 is the date set for the opening of the railroad from Portland to Tillamook and people in that corner of the State will have a big celebration wheu the train reaches Ttilamook Bay from Portland. The Pacific Highway Convention will be held In Portland August 4 and 5 and arrangements will be made by the Port land Automobile Club and representa tive from eveiy prominent city on the Coast are expected to attend. A number of automobi lists will come down in their car frouf Seattle. Some irood work may be expected for good roads as the result of this convention and par ticularly for the great highway projected along the coast line from Canada to Mexico. That the wlule state will be repre sented in framing proposed good roads legislation Is assured now that Uovelior West has named a commission of prom inent men from all parts of Oregon to assist in tbe work. It is believed this will prevent a flood of hasty legislation at the next election and will give the entire state fust what it needed for high way betterment. Mining men will meet at Grants Pass on July IS. The recent finds of rich gold ore in Southern Oregon will pro bably make the coining convention a very interesting one. Invitations to attend the gathering have been sent to commercial bodies and mining organ izations of the whole coast. Surveys of the month ot the Colum bia Kiver during the past week, are expected to show an increased depth ot the ship channel at the river's mouth A gain of 18 inches, or a totttl depth of 27.5 feet, is unolIicUllv reported. The measurements just mnde show that th sweep of tlieriver curienf. and the tides are effective when confined to the chan nel and the increasing depth demon Ktrale the value ol the jetty wotk at tbe month of the river. ?.. a .
