MUCKLE & SON Department Store St. Helens, Oregon Does St. Helens need a new school building? It behooves every parent, every resident, and every taxpayer to give this ques tion serious consideration before the annual school election, Mon day, July 10th. This is a ques tion in which is involved the wel fare of the boys and girls of this town, and vicinity. This is not a matter of indivdual, or per sonal enterprise; but it concerns every man woman and child, directly or indirectly, in and about St Helens. It is not a matter that should in anywise be considered, or connected, with the exploitation of any private interests whatever it is primarily and solely a matter of education. The question that is before the people of this community is, are the educational facilities in St. Helens at this time, what they ought to be? Is the school plant, grounds, building, equipments, etc, sufficient for our present educational requirements? Are our boys and girls here given as good educational opportunities as we can give them at tnis time? Are the boys and girls of St. Helens having as good a chance to obtain an education as boys and girls in other like com munities are having? If we can not answer these questions in the affirmative, would the erection of a new school building help to solve the problem? It seems to me that this is an opportune time for the erection of a new school building, for several reasons; one is that more room is needed than we have in the old building at the present; there are only four rooms in the old building and five teachers have been engaged to teach here next winter, and if the popula tion increases a3 we hope it shall within the next year or two, there ought to be from six to eight teachers in the elementary and grammar school. It does not seem that it would be a wise policy to add to the present build ing; is a poorly arranged building for school purposes, besides the ground upon which the present building stands is entirely too small for school purposes no good school plant can be provided without ample grounds for child ren to play on; the best lessons they get in school, in selfgovern- ment and democracy are learned upon the well regulated play ground; no school can be com plete without ample playgrounds. Secondly, St. Helens ought to be able soon to have a high school. Many towns in the state not any larger than St. Helens are main taining good high schools; other in this county are doing good high school work, from which young men and young women go each year to some of our institu tions of higher learning. The present building is entirely too small for both the grammar and high school. The modern farm, store, mill, factory, etc., must be equipped with the latest and beet machin ery in order to be operated successful in these days; and so the school of to-day needs the most modern school machinery for the best and most efficient operation. In view of the fact that more school room is already needed and that still more will be need ed for his h school work within 1 thanflttvear or two. anrl w . w.iw, Kt.U l THE MIST PRINT SHOP ST. Oregon 1 &iA,UAAA.IlaJlt, that a tract of land of about ten acres ha3 been offered for school uses, it seems that every parent and every other person interesrf.il in the education of the bovs and girls of tbiscommunitv. would 1 in favor of a new building. How ever, this is a question that thn people of the district must de cide for themselves and it ought to have a serious consideration. J.H.Collins. At the last meeting of the Council an ordinance to restrict saloons to the bocks where the business of the town is at present located wa3 voted down. Council man Philip beinar the to vote for its final passage. The only object at present in turning this down is to leave the field open for the securing of a license for the new building in the owner thinks for a mlnutf, that the killing of this ordinal gives him a chance to get license to conduct a saloon there, he is mistaken. The ordinance. was a good one, aad should bv passed. Saloons must be tt gulated. and there should I something in the ordinances to keep them in a bunch, so V the regulation can more casilj Ijo had.
