An Awhil Slaughter. When Red Rupert's bunch d the St Helens ball players get together tfcete must be a jinks on fie job somewhere. Last summer Red aggTegaUoa came here and were licked Id to 4, end tfcey made 23 errors. The performance wa equaled last Sunday, when the Red men came down again and took revsnge, do in? ud St. HeWns bv the score of 24 to 2. What do you think of that? The ball team of the live wire das in the Sun day school would have iuuwl the St. Helens boys the easiest kind of picking The visitors secured just 18 bits and the locals made 13 errors. Jasman, Brakke, Austin and Phil Nadeau did the throw ing and the way the Portland boys pounded the ball around the lot was a caution. The one redeeming feature ol the work of the St. Helens bench was the way Pembroke filled bis position. He was on the job all of the time aad made both oi the St. Helens tallies, on of them being a borne ran over left field fence. He is now in the Good Samaritan Hosoital in Portland, and it will be a matter of sev eral weeks befere tie will be able to be out. The fracture of the noe will in all probability heal in fine shape, but it will take a long time for the cheek bone to resume its former appearance. Recorder J. Q. Gage. Mr. Gage has been appointed City Re corder for the coming year and will as sume the duties of the office as soon as th'.- bond necessary for the fob arrives from the bonding company. Owing to the fact that Mr. Hazen holds the office of Justice of the Peace it was decided by the council that he could not qualify as City Recorder. Mr. Gage has in the past held this office and is familiar with the work, and will fill the position in the same able manner in the future that he did in the past. Deer Island Rural Telephone. A number of the citizens of Deer Is land got together at ArUsan Hall last Monday afternoon for the purpose of organizing a rural telephone company, and as usual when they start anything in Deer Island they made a complete success of the matter. The following officers were elected: President, Fxl mondOIeen; Vice President, N. An drew; Secretary, If. C. Wood; Treas urer, J. F. Loyd; Directors, II. C. Gore, T. C. Meehan, Chas. Merrill. The com pany will start oat with about twenty subscribers and the line will extend from the home of Fred Adams to the Canaan school house, covering a dis tance of about seven miles. Probably at j some time in the future the line will be i connected with the St. Helens system, and this part of the country brought in close touch. The central will be located at Deer Island and connected with the long distaaca wirtt. Columbia street between St. Helen and Cowlitz i all graded and rocked for a width of 24 feet in the center, which is all that tbe road district was figuring on doing. But now the property owners along the street have decided that they cannot afford to let the chance go by to have the whole street macadamized at a low figure and Koad Supervisor Dspain is engaged in rocking it from curb to curb. This work is the cheapest work of the kind that was ever done in the city. The rock being put on it eosting the property owners just about half what it would to buy it and put it on themselves. The crusher will run at this place until about tbe first of next month n hen the supervisor and his crew will 0 to the Yankton neighborhood and be gin the work of getting the r.Js out that way ready for rocking. About the first of July the crusher will be set Hp near the bridge across Milton Creek near the Yankton postoffice. Work is also going on on the road from Houlton j to Giimore Crossing. This road when completed will be a monument to tbe progressive spirit of the people of Houl ton. They needed the road and taw that it would bring trade to their mer chants and so the city government is paying one-half of the cost of it. The contract for furnishing the wood for tbe crusher at Yankton was awarded to Mr. Vi'm. Kkuzie of Bachelor Flat, the price to be $1.78 for a rick of 2-foot wood and !.: for 18-inch wood. Raisin Day, April 29, I9J1 The above date has bean set apart by the people of California in which all are asked to join by eating raisins in the form of "Risin Bread," or in whatever form is desired.
