Mandamus proceed ings have brea eummencrd to comjiel the court to isue the desired license, on the ground that the petitioner has faith fully complied with all the requirements of the law. and that it ia the duty of the Court to grant the prayer of his petition. The record ihows that the petition did not contain sufficient names to entitle the petitioner to a license, and that there mere a greater number of names on the petition : but the plaintitr in the mandamus proceeding will endeavor to demonstrate that this statement i incor rect, and that, further, ttie State law doe not recognize or permit a remons trance. With the growth of St. Helens business will double and there is nothing that is a greater convenience to business men than a good telephone service. Death or Bamiiki. KiMnica Mr. Sam uel Kinder, one of the pioneers of Co lumbia Connty, died at the Good Sa maritan Hospital in Portland on Tues day last, of pneumonia, aged 70 years, and was buried yesterday (Thursday) at the Kinder cemetery, on the old home place, between Columbia City and Deer Island. The Mist editor had known Mr. Kinder forovera quarterof acentury, and had always found him a quiet, courteous g ntleman . We have not, however, suf ficient knowledge of his life work to do him justics to his memory, and trust (hut tak will be undertaken bj some one of his intimate acquaintances, Mr. and Mrs. II. A. 1-egK. of St. Johns, were visiting old friends in St. Helen last wetk. The Mist Is informed that all the occu pants of Sheldon's dock hsve been given notice to vacate, as the proprietor ex pects to begin at once the construction of a new dock. This will be one of the greatest improvements the city can have, as Its people are entirely depend ent upon Mr. Sheldon's dock for access to the boats, and this has been given them in the past without charge. Mr. O. M. Washburn and family uiovedtoHcappooae, where Mr. Washburn will have charge of the newly established Farmers Hank. Mr. Washburn's resi dence in St. Helens demonstrated that he Is a gxxl man to have in a communi ty and we congratulate 3oappioe on its new acquisition.
