WHITE & WHITE HOULTON, OREGON THE DEITZ AFFAIR How a Determined Settler Stood Off a Corporation A certain Mr. Cameron, a widow, owned five "forties" on Thornapple creek. On this tract was located a dam built for diiving purposes. Mrs, Cameron having neglected to pay taxes Barker and family left this week on thli tract one year, the Chippewa for St. Louis where they w ill make their future home. The annual school meeting for this district (No. 2) will be held next Satur day evening, at which time the amount to be raised by taxation Ijr the ensuing year n ill be determined. School clerks must report the amount of the levy made in their dis tricts to the Clerk and to the County Lumber Sc Boom company secured one of the forties by taking up the tax cer tificates. It was then believed that the dam was located on this forty. Thereby bangs the story of Cameron dam. Mrs. Cameron sought to redeem the forty, sas he bad a right to do under the law, but the company, it seams, threatened her with a long legal b tttle, and she chose to let the laud go rather than go to the exp ne of fighting the cae through the courts, She paid the back taxes on the other four forties of men a ill bo iu the employ of the Western 8uperinteU(,ent. Deitx claims that the injunction was not signed and that no indorsement of service was ever made upon it. At any rate, he ignored it. A hearing was held; Deitz did not appear, and the in junction was ma le permauent. "No man can, more than perhaps merely temporarily, defy the law," said Judge John K. Parish iu hanJing down his decision in the matter. Subsequent events have given the words a decidedly humorous savor, After that there were various Inef fectual attempts to serve warrants on Deits, but no aciual fighting, other than a few scuttles, took place until May 10, 1904, when Sheriff Giblin, with a posse, attempted to raid the Deitz place. There was considerable shooting and Deitz go some hemlock bark in his eyes, but oth erwise cob dy was hurt. In June, 1906, Sheriff Gyllm.d with a posse of mercenaries from Milwaukee, disguised as State militiamen, made an attempt to take Deitx. The attempt was disastrous. Clarence Deitz was wounded in the head and John Rogich, one of the deputies, was shot through the neck, the hip and the ankle. The Gist brush wit i'lhi sharpsho iting Deitzes gave the Milwaukee men all the fight ing they wanted. They put Kogicb on a crude litter and fled amain. An hour or to later, when they were in the heart of the deep woods between Cameron data and Winter, one of the deputies, imagin ing that he beard some one pursuing, cried: "Lookout! Deitz!" The bear ers dropped the litter and scalt-red, beating it through the woods for dear life. Two days later Rogich, more dead than alive, was found accidentally by timber cruisers. He finally recovered. This was the most serious Cameron dam affray np to the time of the recent siege and capture. Meanwhile, how ever, there had been waged a sort of guerrilla warfare between Deitz and the lumber people, as represented by the workmen employed in the company's camps thereabouts. Whet ner or not it was the result of direct orders from com pany headquarters does not appear. Dettz was subjected to constant surveil lance. He claims that his spring was poisoned, and that attempts were made to poison his stock. Two year, ago one wing of the dam was utterly destroyed by a blast of dy namite, and logs and water, rushing through the dam, soon wiped out tbe most of Cameron dam. ajlAttx.LliittLlitl.L latlLL tatta.Ai.1 ttttt.L.
