If there are any dirtier netbods possible than are being" used to defeat the Republican rominee for Sheriff in this county it has never been our experience to en counter them. The men that are behind the innuerdoes pub lished in the form of questions in last week's issue of the Clatskanie Chief are worse than the rattle snake that springs upon its vic . tims from its hiding place, for it at least is not afraid to come out into the open to inflict a blow, Here are a string of "Questions' published as correspondence, without any man becoming re . sponsible for any direct charge " against the Sheriff, and yet so framed as to leave the impression that a grave offense has been '. committed against the people of this county. Honest men with good motives d not make charges that way. The people of Colum , bia County have known Martin White for many years.' At one time he was a resident of Clats kanie precinct, and he has always enjoyed the fiiendship of the '." majority of Clatskanie old set- "tiers. His official conduct has j been investigated by grand juries and they have given him a clean bill of health in all official mat ters. He has his faults and no '- doubt at times his conduct in " particular instances may have been deserving of some criticism, . but on the whole he has made a a good record, both as a tax col lector and a process server. At ' the very least he is entitled to that which the law provides the com monest criminal must have, and that is to be confronted with his accuser. A cowardly cur it must be who is afraid to put his name to definite charges. Possibly if Only IS months a?o the Portland Journal was applauding Jay Bowerman for his stand against the corporations and in the inter est of the people on matters of legislation before the State Senate. Truly this belies its present endeavors to stamp Mr. Bowerman as the corporation candidate for Governor. Here are some of the things the Journal had to say in February, 1909, during the last ses sion of the Legislature : BOWERMAN AIDS PEOPLE'S FIGHT FOR STATE RAILROAD BY CARL SMITH. (By Journal Leased Salem Wire ) Salem, Ore., Feb. 18. President Bowerman of the Senate is lending his aid to Speaker McArthur's resolution submitting to the people the question of constructing a State railroad. He declares that the time has come to provide some available weapon for meet ing the power of railroad monopoly, and that the people should have the right to say whether or not they want to fill the storehouse with ammunition. He believes that the central Oregon country should not be allowed to remain bottled up. His influence, added to the action of the House, the favorable report of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the warning sounded in the Governor's message are believed to put the McArthur resolution in a safe position in the Senate, although a determined minority will fight against it to the end. News item in Portland Journal, February 20, 1909 : VICTORY FOR RAILROAD. BILL. Salem, Ore., Feb. 20. These Senators gave their votes to place in the hand3 of the people the power to free themselves from the grasp of the Harriman monopoly for which the Journal has contended: Abraham, Albee, Bailey, Bingham, Chase. Coffey, Hart, Johnson. Kellaher, Miller of Linn, Miller of Linn and Lane, Nottingham, Parrish, Selling, Sinnott. President Bowerman 16. Those voting against the submission of the question to the people were: Barrett, Beach. Caldwell, Cole, Hedges, Kay, Mer rvman. Mulit, Norton, Oliver, Scofield, Smith of Marion, Smith of Umatilla, Wood-14. Cries of "populism" and "bankruptcy" were unavailing in the Senate yesterday to defeat the voice of the people, demanding that the question of permitting the State to engage in railroad con struction shall be submitted to vote in November, 1910. It was a lively fight, and there was only one vote to spare, for with a change of one vote the result would have been tied and the amend ment lost. SDeakin? editorially on February 19. 1910. the Portland Jour nal said : "President Bowerman and Speaker McArthur may have made some mistakes, but as a rule they have taken the right side, and on several occasion have rendered the State excellent and valuable service by their attitude." Speaking editorially on February. 21. 1909. the Portland Jour nal said : . . . "The railroad amendment giving to the people the opportunity to vote to place the State in position to resist the tyrannous railroad policy now in vogue, was passed, notwithstand ing the desperate attempts of railroad interests to defeat it. It is legislation of the first rank, in that it has in view the deliverance of Oregon from a policy of discrimination that keeps the State at the foot of the ladder in railroad mileage and State development." . . On page 2 of the Portland Journal of January 15, 1909, there appears a large picture of Jay Bowerman; under this picture is the tollowmg: Jay Bowerman, f resident of the Mate senate. He Refuses to be Made the Tool of the Opponents of Statement 1." the name was known the motive behind these attacks would at once be apparent. Possibly "the ass knoweth his master's crib," and does whatever is necessary to keep his nose in the fodder. Come out into the open. "Say, Martin White did" this or that wrong act, and put your name to the statement, otherwise honest! people will think that any man j who by his silence indorses such i indecent and cowardly attacks is entirely unfit to hold an office where courage and honesty are the great requisites. The Legislature should have. nothing to do with creating a new county. Neither should the people who are not interested di rectly in the matter. A vote for 360 X Yes on the ballot will place county divisions where they be- ong, and that is with the citizens of the new and old counties in any proposed division. In a Legis lature the logrolling and political cross-scheming destroys anv knowledge a member from the distant part of the State may have, and in a general vote of the entire citizenship injustice may be done through ignorance, - - w One of the latest "hollers" against the initiative measures is that it will require an average of 15 minutes to vote on them and the candidates also on the ballot This is pure nonsense. Any man can mark a sample ballot at his leisure, take this in the booth with him and mark the actual ballot in three minutes. Of course many men will not vote on all the measures, and many more will not vote on all the candidates. The new postoffice site in Port land, which the owners offered to Uncle Sam for $325,000, was assessed for $125,000. It is un derstood that all negotiations are off now, the option having ex pired, and that next time Uncle Sam must cough up more money if he wants it. The Assessor should get busy and double the figures he has placed on this and other properties.
