Rainier County Officia Paper THE SITUATION ' Nearly a thousand Republican voters met in Columbia County last Saturday and selected a ticket to be presented to the people at the November election. There was no charge of unfairness, no bull dozing, coercing or bribery. The great majority of the Republican voters of Columbia County.de- liberately expressed their opinion under the regulations provided by law, and no good reason can be given why every Republican nominee should not be elected. They are all honest and capable men. and no one has had the temerity during an earnestly contested primary campaign to put his signature to a single statement that would render . them unfit for the united support of the Republican party. There has been enough of dissension among Republicans, and it is high time for them to get to gether. The Mist is an independent Republican paper. It has not al ways supported the entire county ticket and it will not promise to do so in the future. Vhenever it knows that certain candidates are being urged by big business interests for the purpose of lessening their taxes andincreas ing the burdens of the average taxpayer it will buck those candi dates, no matter how estimable they may be as private citizens, but where there is nothing but a personal contest among men of equal integrity, it deems it the duty of every participant in that contest to abide loyally by the result To do otherwise is to dis credit the direct primary law and invite political chaos. The assault in detail is the favorite method of attack of the . Democratic party. Few in num bers, its leaders realize that they can not win by a general attack; therefore, as the campaign pro gresses, they will select the weakest candidate on the Re publican ticket and concentrate the assault upon him. The answer to this method in Columbia Coun ty and through the State should be what is known in football practice as "team work." Stand by the ticket all along the line from Governor to Constable, un less it can be demonstrated to you that some Republican candi date has more of the "yellow dog" in him than his Democratic opponent The man who fosters his grouches and is continually ripping open his old sores will never accomplish any good pur pose thereby. We have had enough of that kind of work in this county. "Let the dead past bury its dead," for the good of the party and Columbia County. OUR OPPORTUNITY The Oregon State Horticultural Society holds its annual fruit how at the armory in Portland on November 30th, December 1st and2nd.Thisis Columbia County's great opportunity to demonstrate that it produces apples second to none in the world and we are glad to learn that a number of our growers will have exhibits there, including Mr. Tidcombe of Scappoose and the Yankton Association. There was but one exhibitor from this county at the last fruit show. Mr. U. S. D'Spain exhibited two boxes of Rome Beauties from Fred Dangerfield's orchard at Warren, and they were awarded the blue ribbon. A successful demonstration of our ability to produce the finc.t patity apples on land cleared of j fir timber stumps will be of in calculable value to the property owners of this county. THE COUNTY CLERK Columbia County never had a better officer than W. A. Harris, who was defeated by Mr. LaBare on Saturday last No one has at any time intimated that he was in the slightest degree lacking in the full performance of his duty as County Clerk, and he has won the highest praise from all who had business with the Clerk s office. Judge Thoa. A. McBride stating that he was the most efficient man holding that position in the fifth judicial district As a member of the County Board of Equalization he stood with the average taxpayer and home builder whenever their interests conflicted with the interests of the corporations or timber own era, and to this fact and a private grudge he owes his defeat more than to any prejudice against a third term, though there is no doubt this prejudice was a factor in the election. Mr. Harris' in timate knowledge of the affairs of the county enabled him to be of great service to the county court and no man with any business sense will assert that the public service will be in any way bettered by his retirement, Those who insist that public business should be transacted in the same manner as careful men transact private business will find it hard to harmonize this theory with their action in voting against W. A. Harris. All this with out any insinuation what ever against Mr. LaBare, whose service as deputy has made him better fitted for the office to which he will be elected than any other man in the county with the exception of Mr. Harris. PATRONIZE THE HOME MERCHANTS People read the advertisements of the large city firms, in which claims are set forth that they have reduced articles that are worth a small fortune until they beg you to come and get a bonus for taking them away. And they seem to believe it all. We print a section of an advertisement of a Portland firm, and it is from one of the leading stores in the city, which we cut from one of the daily papers, and that is a sample of the kind of claims that gets patronage away from the home merchants in country towns; $7.00 Untrimmed Hats at 69c. $1.25 Untrimmed Hats at 10c. And there is a lot more about the same. Now, what is a person to think? Are they selling hats worth $7.00 at 69c? We doubt it But they say that $7.00 is the 'regular" price. If it is and the value is so small that they can cut it to 69c, then when you pay $7.00 you are certainly victimized in great shape. Of course, there are perfectly egitimate sales, but they are few and far between. It is easy to reduce the price of an article that is being sold for seven or eight prices. It makes one wonder how much they really paid for that $7.00 hat that can be sold for69c. The mail order supply houses are another detriment to many stores that are selling better and cheaper goods than the same mail order houses. They advertise that they will "pay the freight" and make people think they are doing them a big favor. It can be safely said that almost any country store will sell to you and et you give your order out of a mail order catalogue and at the mail order prices.
