Drew Killed Near Here Last Friday Night Tbe body of Joh P. Drew waa sound at an early boor Saturday morning oa (he trail laliwa tbe Phillip Bra, quarry and lloolton, a abort distance from the Milton Cre-k bride, iUl a bullet bole through the bead trust tpl to temple. lie had (alien lorsrard with nia band nder him, the right hand reatinfon a SS-enliber rcvofw, one chamber ol hich had bees discharged, while In one ol hit hip pockets wis a 22-caliber re volver with three empty chambers. Drew waa yoaag aiaa of nineteen who came to St. Helens from Salliran. Maine, two year ago, tearing his mo' her in their againat bis toccesffa! riral, laying he "would like to threw Johnny Drew Into the riTcr." Knapp also, on tbe day ol the atonler, wrote a postal card to Mias Smith saying "I am having a good time I and hope yon are tbe same." Drew had , received several threatening yta) car's j but bad dcatrored them. Ht was a snem I bar ol tbe 1'aited Artiaana and on the nigbt ot hi death had attended lodge at Hoolti, and waa on his way home when killed. The testimony at the in quest threw some suspicion on Fred Knapp and tbe aatborities here immed iately proceeded to Investigate bis .1 TO OUR COUNCIL. ( A blockmaker was arrested Sat urday riiffht for drunkenness and disorderly conduct He was put in the city jail and, kept there until released by due process of law. He deserved what he got and the ..Marsha! 13 to be com 4iehded for arresting him. V, But is there one law for the . work lnjpr.an 'who oversteps the limit and another f or the sa!oon j keeper? The man arrested was too plainly drunk for there to be any dispute a? to his condition, and it Is certain that he had been sold Hquor while in an intoxicated con dition. The law says that when a saloon keeper sells liquor to an intoxicated man the saloon keep er's license shall be revoked. It fa not necessary that the proof in such cases shall be absolute; but only that the council shall be convinced. f ' Saturday afternoon a man came rreHnout of one of the saloons with a string of obsenity pouring fxork Ws Hps; but he went on his way to another saloon, where he procured more liquor. X Do the saloons own the town and can they do just as they please, -while the working man who goes beyond the limit is thrown into jail? It seems to us that the saloons should at least take care of the drunks and, keep them off the street. The saloon men get "the money, and if they do not have to obey the law, and we admit they dont, they might be kind enough to d this as a favor to' the community. 4 " - tV, ,i --r ' ' ' ' (a mil i):Am i - i..-v. . jr ( 4 m I m m 9 9 9 9.
