MCGINN'S REMARKS. Isthore to be any exception In the Oregonian's denunciation of those who oppose the "ad vis- .ory" assembly, or are the vialu of It wrath to be poured India criminatcly upon all who rcfuw to come within the pate? There's Henry McGinn, for Instance What is to be done with him? Heretofore he has been con Hklered one of the pillars of the faith. Either he must recant or be read out of the party. He has cant his lot with those who bo liove the direct primary law should be observed in letter and spirit, witnoui reservation or mi ul vocation. And he has not done this in a quiet and unosten totious way. That is not Henry's style. He has done worse than procluim it from the housetops. He has invaded the holy of holies and roared his defiance to the high priests of the old hugger mugger cut and dried convention system. Think of the nerve of the man who accepts an invita- ... h . t M tion to smoKe tne cigar or peace with the great leaders of the Multnomah Republican Club, and gives them this sort of a talk, which we extract from the Eve ning Telegram: Judge McGinn outlined old po litical conditions under the con vention system and before the direct primaries and declared he had witnessed such sights as he hoped no young man would ever again see in Portland. The use of money for corruption, moat ing, bribery and many other crooked schemes which were in vogue before the direct primaries were relatedr He asserted that before the days of Statement One the of lice of United State Sena tor had been sold to the highest bidder, and that the ral roads had paid the campaign expenHes of men they wanted in the Senate and that the interests wanted these Senators because they wanted special privileges. The trouble with the Republicans in Oregon, contended the Judge was that they had too large a majority. Although the state had never gone for but one Dem ocratic candidate for President, of ten Governors five were Dem ocrats and every Democrat elect ed Governor had been re-elected while not one of the Republican Governors had been renominated This was the fault of factional trife and differences. Concerning the assembly, he declared he was opposed to it, for it would fall into the hands of one man, and as to electing the delegates, he asserted that the farmer: the workman and the clerk would not appear at the (Kills of an unauthorized election, mt that tho owners of franchises, prite-flght trusts, the thugs and the parasites would be on hand with all their forces. Rather than see Oregon go back to the old style, the Judge said he would be willing to tell his story to the voters of every county. He said that politics in Oregon were the most corrupt he had ever heard or read of prior to the direct pri mary, and the reason tho reform wave Bwung the pendulum to where it is today was because politics in Oregon had teen so rotten. By the timo McGinn gets through telling his story to the people of Oregon and tho State Grange and labor unions get ful ly into the fray the advisory as sembly will have dwindled to nothingness, and the politicians who are now advocating it will have scuttled to cover.
