Columbia County is the jwssessorof a bountiful supply of good rock for road purposes. A great deal of it will be needed in this district. We are paying $1.03 per yard to the St Helens Quarry Company for crushed rock at the quarry. It can be crushed at a maximum cost of 30 cents per yard, and the rail road company has offered to transport it to any point in the county for one cent per ton per mile. Why not buy another rock crusher and start the quarry? Don't it look like a good propo sition, and if not, why not? The estimate for crushed rock in this district alone last spring was 4,000 yards or $4,200 worth. At 30 cents ier yard it would be $1200, making a saving in one year of $3,000 in one district, which would very nearly install the plant Why should this ap parent waste continue? RULE OR RUIN. CORRECTION. The Mist vaa in error when it stated that Commissioner Tiche nor refused to sign the order for the special election. Judge Dart held that the judge had exclu sive authority in the matter and that the commissioners had no say. - ASSESSMENT flCURES Showing the valuation ol mcroliamlite, Urging toi, aud mill nd machinery In ColuiuhU County; MKRCtlAX!1lt. State ment candidate;? have been rather uniformly successful, and until it can be shown that the ma jority of Republicans favor the Oregonian's ideas there will be no good reason for oiteying that paper's dictates. It may have a sufficient following of ijolitical highbinders to defeat the party nominees, but we doubt it, and even if it should be able to do so we do not believe the voters are cowardly enouj?h to be kicked, cursed, or knifed into submission. The friends of the direct primary system and Statement No. 1 will go as far in its defense of their principles as the Oregonian will in opposition. Unless the advis ory convention adopts resolutions pledging its candidates to abide by the decision of the voters at the direct primary they will have no claim whatever upon the sup port of the voters in the. general election.
