If the labor council stood by itcoif it course would not have nv eTMit Dolitical insignificance hut it has the endorsement of the Grange, and, we believe, of tne great majority of the unorgan ?oA rotle of the State. The Grange in Columbia County has adopted similar resolutions, anu we predict that no candidate ior office can be elected nere next year who places himself in oppo sition to the direct primary law bv accepting the nomination of "advisory assembly' (so- called). We believe this is true of the State at large, and that politicians, realizing this fact, will not permit themselves to be sacrificed upon the convention altar. . . . i . i i , rtm a T" r- u I r I "T I OC ml'ArNINUALi Olnl C.IVICHN I Are You Of the Financial Condition of Columbia County, O.on, on QQJJQ f Q BUILD . ? To this extent the recent election was a victory fF &e saln men an( yet it is apparent that those among1 them who are prudent will conduct their business with a view to retiring after the gen eral election in November, 1910. The meagre majority of 64 wiH then disappear and Columbia, with the other counties of the state, will finally expel the li censed saloon. Outside of the four incorporated cities the anti saloon vote is largely in the ma jority, and this would be more plainly demonstrated if the vote in St Helen3 and Houlton could be separated from the precinct vote of Union precinct, as was done at Rainier. The farmers of Columbia County are beginning to see the bunco game that is being played upon them by the towns. Thev must pay their share of county and state ex penses caused by the liquor traf fic, but get no portion worth con sidering of the bribe or license money raid to the cities by the saloonkeepers. That this bribe j money was a potent factor in set- j l i-eii , , . . i i ' Aarun Keil-y " tling tne election is very piamiy , nn,imvmn shown by the figures from Rain ier precinct. Theji-x t saloon licenses will just abcut pay interest on the debt, and the ; l d wt running expenses must be met by direct taxation. The same argument prevailed to a large extent in all the incorporated towns. "We need the money" . wa3 the cry everywhere, and it , was a votegetter. It is true, al- so, that the calling of a special j ' election was unpopular, as it put an extra, and, as many thought, an unnecessary expense upon the ; county, and this argument was .' made the most of by the saloon men. Had it been a regular election there is no doubt the connty would have gone dry, not withstanding the hard work and liberal expenditure of the saloon men. 2 20 8 00 4 00 12 00 4 00 e oo 6 00 4 00 u oo 4 au 12 40 2 00 2 00 2 00 2 00 t 00 1 2 00 The Forest Grove Press is a new candidate for popular favor.
