Hound Ovhh The preliminary exnml nation of George Murgiitroyd (alias Mc- rtullu.r) on the charge of murdering K"lert Livingtone at Uoble lust Decem ber took pluce before Justice Watkint at the court house in this city last Satur lny afternoon. The witnesses for the Stale were Mrs, Richmond and a young man named Thorns from Junction City, and Hoy M.itour, who is being held on a charge of burglary. Mrt. Richmond testifier! that Murgatroyd told her at Junction City, where they were both employed in hotel, that he had killed a man at (ioble. Thorns testified to hear ing Murgatroyd make a similar boast to a man named Houston w ith whom he had some dispute over wages. Malone testified that Murgatroyd told liiia at Ooble that he was going to kill Living stone and also told him afterwards tlmt he had killed him. The defendant at tempted to prove an alibi and a number of witnesses swore that he was in Astoria for four days after the city election, and this would have Included the day of the murder. Murgatroyd testified in bis own behalf and absolutely denial the Irtish of the statements made by Mrs. Kichmniid, Mr. Thorns, and Roy Ma lone. Mtiinatrovd's father was present during the enauiiua'.ion and assisted bis sou to the best of his ability. Justice W'atkins bound the defendant over to await the action of the grand jury at the May term of court. The fishermen are busy overhauling nets and boats, getting in readiness for the open season.
