lieve to be one of the murderer, of Rob
ert Livingstone, who was killed at Coble,
in this county, tout December. They
found McAutlior working a. a cook in a
iinloon restaurant. The Deputy Sheriff

in finding their man, who was
asleep in a lodging houw. McAutlior
timde no resistance and appeared to un-

asked the Sheriff whether he had imK.ri

ition from the Governor of Oregon, and
this appeared to tutinfy him, aa he uiaile
no protest against going back to Oregon
The evidence agaiu-t McAutbor is cir
cumstantial, but ii considered to be quite
strong. It consists of the tettimony of
Koy Muloue, who in now in the Portland
jail on a charge of murder, and alio the
tuteuieiit of a Mri, Richmond of Ku
gene, McAutlior and Jack Lewi., who
in supposed to have been hi. partner in
the alleged crime, are .aid to have
brugued of committing a murder when
they met Mr.. Richmond at a hotel in
Junction City, where .be wa. day cook
and McAutlior night cook. During their
ty at Junation City tbe po.tofllce wni
robbed and these two men are suspected
of being the one. who did the work.
McAutlior, whose real name i Murga-
troyd, and whose parents reside at Seat
tle, i, accoiding to statement, be hat
made, a deserter from tbe I'nitcd State.
Navy. He i about 25 years old and of a
pleasant personal appearance. He denies
any connection with the crime and claim,
to be able to prove an alibi.

llyland recently resigned as principal of

school was perfectly satisfactory to him
self and the patrons, and nothing but
urgent business necessities caused his
withdrawal. Mrs. Hrougli (nee Ruby
Jacksin) was chosen to complete the
term as principal.

purchased the Vermont Hotel at Houl
tn and arc remodelling and changing it
into a first-class house. Kvery room in

public. The barroom, formerly occupied
by Lee A Schaffer, will be reopened. The
new firm Intend, to conduct a thoroughly
up to date house mid will undoubtedly
receive a large amount of patronage.

The City Council at ita meeting hud,
Monday night, In addition to clearing
up all bill., instructed the mar'di!il to lay

vexed question of a water supply wax
quite fully discussed and it appeared to
be the general impression that the pipe
in the low places was clogged with sedi
ment. Mr. Prank Prcscott claimed that
it would lie neccssarv to put a blow-off
valve in each of these low places and an
air-valvu at the high points; and that
for less than (600 he would agree to sup
ply the material and put the system in
good working order. No action was
taken on hi. proposition. President
Cliff annouueed that I lie M. Helena Mill
Company would, if the city laid eight
inch pipe, to the mill, connect the pipe
with their pumps and give tbe city com
plete fire protection.
Walter and James Cox were visitors to
their old home in St. Helens last Tues
day, Walter i. an expert at railroad
con.truction work and expects soon to
go to California to take charge of a force
of men on tunnel work which I. his spe
cialty. James Cox i. general agent of
