In order to diicovcr a forage plant hioh will grow and yield profitable crop in the o-called "dry ection" of th state, th staff of the Statt J College Expsrimtnt Station ha car ried on xteniv investigation at both the local and iub-tation during ' the pat year. Scores of forage plant hav been olanted and toted, and at Ihc present itage of thit txperimenta Ition. it i known that milo maiz iJcruiaUm corn, artichokes, Kaffir corn, ana tmber cane corn arc among the belt tdaptcd plants for "dry larming Th work of tb ub itation t Con nell has been carried along four lines: Firtt, there hat been an effort to de termine the bett method oi handling tummer fallow, including a tudy of th effect of certain tool; econd, there ha been a study of the adapta bility of variou well-known dry linoi forage plant to central Washington condition; third, a ttudy of the effect of growin a cultivated crop, in place of the tummer fallow, upon the wheat crop; fourth, there hat been a ttudy of the adaptability and methodt of teed inir of well-known dry land grasses, and legumet. Although the past teason has been an exceptionally dry one. and the re- aillto rmitd not he oynorto trt idnu I forage crop in at favorable a light as the average season would, yet several li . .a olantt showed up very promising Among thete were Jerusalem corn, milo maize, Kaffir corn, artichokes and amber cane corn. Another prom ising one was a tmall, early maturing variety of dent corn. Other plantt tried were cow peas, toy beans, chick pea, common millet, Japanese millet, Hungarian millet, golden millet, common field peat, kale, rape, popcorn and flint corn. On September 10 the Milo maize hnwed itself to be the best drouth resister. This plant grows very simi lar to corn, except that it scatters a great deal more, and is more leafy. Jerutalem corn and Kaffir corn are both very similar in appearance to ommon corn, being about midway -etween common corn and Milo maize .a buthinett. Their seed, however, is borne in a large and fairly compact head, or bunch on the end of the stalk. They yield quite heavily in most placet, snd judging from this year's experience, would mature a fair ouan tity of teed at Connell, which makes very useful feed for poultry and twine. The difference in the showing of ferusalem and Kaffir corn and Milo maize wat quite noticeable. While the leavet of the two former plants did not dry up, the inner plants of the olols were about one-third smaller in size than the plantt on the outer edge This showed that their growth had leen materially cherked bv the short age of moisture. The trial leaves it nder the impression that Jerusalem id Kaffir corn are but poorly adapt I to central Washington conditions. Dent corn made almost perfect stand, but the growth was scanty, and .inly a tmall quantity of nubbins ma tured. The present, season's growth could not be considered a proved crop, but corn of the same strain grown on land adjoining the experiment station last vear was a fair crop, and may be taken is a fairly good demonstration o' what could be done with dent corn on any good, dry land farm. The seed, however, would have to be idanted to the locality. The flint corn and the popcorn nade a good stand, and matured well, nit their growth was so tmall that hey could not be given consideration n comparison with dent corn. The artichokes made an excellent stand, ind showed remarkable ability to con -inue their growth throughout the en ire drv season. Whether it would pay to utilize rain land for the growth of these oots is an open question. The other lants thst were used made to light a rrowth thit teason that further tria' will be necessary before they can be considered as even promising. Of the non-cultivated forage plants, he most promising was the alfalfa This made a fairly good stand and ontinued to grow slowly throughout he entire season. On September 10 t stood about eighteen inches or two feet high. As the first season is needed to establish alfalfa, this is considem in excellent showing. The alfalfa was seeded with a grain drill, which sl owed the seed to be conducted down into the shoes of the drill, so that it was deposited in moist toil. It is questionable whether a good stand :ou!d be secured by broadcast seed ng and harrowing in. Hairy vetch made a poor stand, but I promising growth. The tenacitv with which they cling to the soil when once established makes it rather "tte tionable whether it would pay to teed rood grain land to vetch, unless permanent pasture is desired. Of the grasses, the most oromisins was the slender wheat grass; smooth brome grass. Neither of these grasses. however, showed ud as we II as the alfalfa. Another season's growth is needed to determine anything definite egarding their production. Other grasses tried were meadow fescue, or chard Rrass, tall oat grass. None of these grasses made a show worthy of mention. Since the past season has been exceptionally dry, they will be given another trial. The only suggestions the station has to make to farmers regarding these, forage crops are that alfalfa, brome grass, acclimated dent corn, Milo maize, Jerusalem corn and Kaffir corn are worthy of trial in a small way. The farmer had better learn w to handle them, however, before: trying them on a large scale. Walot-Llae Waoa.
