Mr. T. Lnweretice, ol Coble, was in town lust Friday to interview School Superintendent Copelaud in regarsl to the-creation ol new school .tunnel out o( District 32. Mr. Uwience represent! that his children have to walk five mile to attend ichool and Mint the neighbor hood would settle up much more rapid ly it the had better opporlunitiet to at tend school. He ha several neigbb r who are ol the same opinion . Messrs Benson and Coovert.of the Ben son lagging Company, were befoie the county court last Monday with an olfer to dismiss their taa appeals against the county provided the county would a-seaa their timrer in 5 north. 8 west, on the httsisi.f tst) cents SI. M and sJl.W accord ini! to location, which would make a dif ference ol about f.W.Om) in the com pony's assessment. It 1 probable that the board will moke a counter p-oposition which the Beaton Company will deem advisable to accept, thus taking the Ben son case ofl the calendar. We are incorporated under the laws of Oregon. Col. Co. Bank The St. Helens Quarry Company is this week transferring from depot at Hoaltoa to their qnarrv at St. Helens an immense steam shovel that is supposed to do the work of one hundred men The shovel, which has its own car, cost about ten thousand dollars aud the - freight (rom the Kast to Houlton was SltfUO. In order to get it to the quarry it was necessary to have aboun two hnn- drcd feet ol track laid and alter the car has'travencd that distance the track ii ' Ukea up and rclaid. It is a slow and ex pensive process, but the only one possible. As the distance from Houlton to the quarry it about ten thousand feet it will be necessary to shift the track fifty times before the immense- machine arrives at its destination. Mr. J II. Wellington is putting a great deal ol expense upon the building he is soon to occupy aa a general tns-r-chandisc store. New sills have been put in, new .flooring laid and the old front taken out to make room lor a modern glass Iront. All of which indicates that ' Mr. Wellington h i faith in the future of St. Helens and believes the county seat of Columbia Couuty has entered upon a period ol permanent grywth. We are insured against holdups and robbers in the National Surety Co. We also have a night watchman. i . 1 Col. Co. Bank Arthur, ton of Captain and Mrs. Barney Weir, was operated upon fur appendicitis at a Portland hospital last Friday. At first it was thought he would not live but later news is that be is in a fair way to recovery. Arthur has many friends here among the older people, as be waa always a well mannered and obliging boy, therefore there is a great deal of interest felt in him, and a very sincere hope for bis speedy recovery. Ir. and Mrs, M. V. Haen started Sunday for Grant's Puss, in the hope that the climate of that ncighlxirhood will be beneficial to Mr. Haen's health. About a hundred and 'fifty people men, women and children celebrated the fourth by picnicing at Pullerton'i grove, near Warren. There was neither oration nor fireworks, but Just a neigh borhood gathering and gabfrst, every body seeming to have a thorough good , - time. It it a beautiful place for a cele bration, with a pleasant grove and a spleridid spring, ami, if properly planned and advertised next year there will no doubt be a great crowd present.
