1953 ia the actual membership today ol
the Portland Commercial Club, there
are 22 application! to be considered at
tha reaular meeting of the Board ol
Governor! tomorrow. 1400 la a Iflgure
of early realisation. Inquiries hare
come from all over the State relative to
the membership of thieorgsntsatlon, the
interest probably being awakened ly
the recent house wurmlna held in the
new eight story steel home ot the Club.
There ia a healthy and hearty rivalry
between the members of the Portland

The ladies, too, have..becotun enthusi

1908 will register the greatest crop of
berries and cherries that Oregon has
ever produced. Quality ia magniSceut,
quantity almost unlimited, and while
humanity is enjoying this fruit the
maturing hay crop Insuies a big increase
in the dairy output, which has been
greatly benefitted by as good spring
pastures aa were ever known in thla sec
tion. Residents of the Northwest should
take pains to see that their Eastern
country friends are made familiar wi'h
the unequalled conditions which make
dairying so profitable here.
The Sixth National Conclave of the
I'hi Delta Kappa will meet in Portland
from the 6th to the 11th of July, and
the local chapter is arranging an elabor
ate series of festivities.
English Walnuts
English walnuts have become the
prevailing fad in the line of tree plant
ing in many parts of the Willamette val
ley, where the prune erase held sway 15
to 20 years ago, and many prune trees
are being uprooted to make room for
those producing the toothsome nut, saya
the Portland Telegram. The Oregon
Walnut company, of this city, hes pur
chased th 15-) acre tract known aa the
Roberts Donation Land Claim, within
two miles of North Yamhill in Yamhill
county, paying $.11,000 (or it, and has
contracted with Thomas Price, of Don
dee, in Yamhill county, who agrees to
set out the requisite nnmber of walnut
trees the eusuing fall. The land baa
been In a high state of cultivation for a
number of years, and iaaaid to be well
adapted to the culture of the nut, the
growing of which has become profitable
in that part of the valley.
The walnut tree begin to bear the
fourth year, and is supposed to become
profitable the sixth, although it is gen
erally understood that the grower must
wait 10 to 12 yeara for the best return.
After the 10th year the business ia said
to pay better than any other agricultural
enterprise in the state. Thatr-es to be
set out on the tract in question sre to
be tbeee yeara old, and so are to begin
to pay for the trouble and expense with
in three or four years of the time of
planting.
