Helens Changes Since 1 896 For more than ten years the Kepubli can putty has been m charge of nil. de partments of the government. Tie people seldom exhibit such steulfa-t confidence in piny or trust It wiih entire contr .1 for so long a pei lod. An other national election is lit hand, ami it in right that the) slioulJ carefully re view the manner in which the respon sibilities have been carried, passing judgment upon the iniliences and issues tnat have twen paramount ami the poli cies that have been adopted. The pre, i lential election of lrWi hinged upon the value of the dollar. Should it be scaled down one-half or niore, or be kept up to the gold standard, theonly measureuiem accepted throughout the world ? Should the debt of the nation be paid in 100 cent dollar or tie adjusted, w ithout the consent of creditor, to an arbitrary re duction? The gold standard prevailed and has been established by the parly that promised to do it. Such is the power of example that nearly all the nations of the earth now recognhe the uniform standard, and the few nations that do not are place I at a disadvantage. All that the Republican party proruisd in regard to the value of the dollar has been fulfilled. Nearly eleven years ago the protective tariff was icstored by Republican vote. Another distinct promise was thus fuly redeemed. The present tariff law, shaped by such practical economic stu dents as McKinley ana Iiingley lias been in force for more than a decade. It is identified with thecouutry's greatest eia of prosperity. Its enemies said a return to protection would destroy our foreign trade. But the oppoite has happened Our sales abroad, including manufac tures, have largely it creased and at this time the balance of tnule in our favor is at the highest recorded point. I'm some unexpected th.ngs have hnppe n J since that 1H!I, calling for the proof of the ability to meet emergencies not looked for. The war wttti Spain Cwir in 1898 and Was ended before the clo-c of that year. Its story is Well known to the people. Within the decade referred to Hawaii, the I'hilippineg, Porto Rico and some other islands have been added to the national territory. We have looked to Cuba's interests as a ward while it trim to organize a stable govern ment oi it own. A Panama zo e ha been acquired and the interoceanicc:inul Is moving on rapidly. An irrigation law has pasted and $10,- 000,000 is going into various law pro jects to furnish the arid lands with the To The Voters cf Columbia County.
