Coroner St. Helen TAXING TIMBER LANDS In the April number ol the Timber- man, the organ of the timber interest of Oregon, appear a very Interesting article by H. D. Langille, which ahould be In the hand of every farmer in the State of Oregon and should be thorough ly discussed by all grange and lalior or ganization. Mr. Langllle' opening parsirrapb. is the keynote of the tiiiibe land monopolists, and therefore we giv It in full: "There i a growing tendency anion the people of Oregou, and particularly among the residents of heavily timbered counties, to asaail the so-called "timber barons" and compel them, through tax tion, tocontributea largely as poeaibl to the maintenance of the county which their holdings are located. I do not say that taxes levied upon timbei land at the present time are maliciously burdensome, but there is a tendency in tiiat direction, and it is trs mtv or TBI STATS TO TAKE Sl'CH STEP At WILL PREVENT OVER TAXATION OPPORKST LANDS, before the evil of such a system ihall have caused Irreparable injury to not only oar State, but the vast territory which is, and will become more and more, dependent upou us for fore.-t product." This is probably the first instance on record where a band of predatory capi talists have had the nerve to de-jaand that the State take steps to protect them from paying their just share of the bur den of taxation, for that is what this specious plea means, and nothing else Timberland speculators have made millions out of Columbia County, and they now have it so bottled up that the acuta! setl It-ment of the County i,abeen retarded. The statement that the tim ber baron uiuat go efoe the actual set' tier s false. The Nehal. m Valley had more residents twenty Bve year ago than it has today, but many of them were the tools of the timber speculator, who gave them to understand that he would take their claims off their hands at loon as Sna! proof was made. The actual ttler is still in the valley. He has prospered and has a good home and in many instances a comfortable bank account. He need road and he need schools. He is willing to pay hi full share of the tax nei es-ary to i-ecure thete bleing, but the men for whom Mr. Lai, gill pleads use all their in fluency against him. We remember in the early days when the citizens of St. Helens a-ked for fund to bold a longer term of chool the m il men here Toted their crew in opposition ti this demand and defeated it, notwith standing they should have been able to appreciate the blearing of education. The only reason for their course wus that they had no children to send to the school and that they woo d derive to direct benefit from the tax. Such a thing as aliruism is altogether beyond their comprehension. Tuetimbern.en to-day are actuated by the tame selfish motives. Many of them are nome-idents. They care nothing for the county or the State, The prob lem with them Is to squeeze It a dry a po.i'iljle, in order tlmtiheir families may travel in Europe and their bank account Of the County Clerk of Columbia County, State ol Ore.n. .bowing the .amount and number of claim, allowed by (ho County Court of said County, f i I end amount of warrants um i IH)7, 10 the 31st dayol March, W.
