Coroner SU Helens NOVEMBER 8. THE CAUSE. There has been a pauic in Wall Street, nd the banks of New York have re (used to pav the coin due their western correspondents, as a result money is ctrce, and simultaneously the great corporations have ordered all work sus pended upon their various projects. These corporations are controlled in the East, and the orders to quit work bear all the earmarks of a preconcerted plan. President Roosevelt ia a thorn in the; side of the schemers and robbers whol have had their bands upon the people's throats for so many years. From Washington to St. Helens the co po rations have bad absolute control, and they have literally ground the people beneath their heels. Thev have built up favored localitiesand torndown by their discriminations for and against. They have oppressed manufactures and curbed the commerce of the couutry by their exorbitant rates, and they have created enormous wealth by the simple process or inflation. On this sullied Chair man New is quoted as follows: "Some peopie are oisposeii to atUen great political importance to the selection of the convention citv. but as mailer of 'act there is piactically uo significance to it. The action of the convention in the nomination of the ticket and the araiung ol the platform is not influence light and revoked ed by local conditions or consideration, stuck to its guns. uiea mistake for any One to assert or think, even, that this or that candidate would profit by the selection of any par ticular city." The record does not bear out Mr. New's assertious, as local senti ment has influenced these national actions. It is claimed by politicians of weight that the democratic split in iaw would not Have occtued had the convention been held in a city less aggressive in its championship of lavery. -Everyone knows that Charles- THE RAILROAD'S ANSWER valuation for purposes of taxation is iurir ranting, snu. ii appears that even apoo their watered stock their earnings nave Deen greater than at auy previous time in their history. They have been persistent violators of the law, and for so long a time have they been exempt from punishment that they are in a frenzy of rage at the President who has I had the courage anJ stiength to mete out to them a very small measure of pnuishment for their nMsdeeds. But the people know better, and will rally to the support of the administration. Between the people and me preaatory corporations there is war, and wsr, as Sherman said, is hell; but it is necessary if this country is to be anything more than a field for exploita tion and the people anything but vassals of the corporations. You don't get any thing that is worth having without pay ing the price, and all that the people Will ask of the administration is that the work be thorough so that itailll not nave to be done overr.gain in this generatinu. The basis for their toa WMtoo ,,. ,or Mf uuu ai cnicago the same year the sewaru men couiph.ii.ed that local sen timent, operating on the convention, secured the nomination of Mr. Lincoln. Because the east is still tmrriendly to M r. Bryan's policies, the Bryan men todav are oppposiugl the suggestion of an eastern city for next year. And so the merry w ar goes on. The Northern l'.c'.uo Railroad Com pany, upon being defeated by the Lum bermen In their smt to restrain it from putting in effect the proposed extortion ate rat-, sent out orders to its agents to not receive shipments of lumber at any price. Every attempt to curb or regulate them as, and still is met with thseata of public disaster and, not satiflied with threats, there is FIRE-KILLED TIMBER. In circular No. 113, sent out by the V. S.
