COLUMBIA'S EXHIBIT.
Mr. W. J. Fullerton i at Salem this
week, arranging Columbia County' ex
hibit for the State Fair, which begins
next Mondav.v From what we have seen
of the grain, grasses, fruits and vege
tables assembled at the court house it ii
going to be a,jrery crediuble showing in
bose lines, though not as complete as it
should be. Lat year the sum of fXC
was appropriated for this purpose. This
year the sum of :XX) is appropriated, the
compensation of the commissioner being
the same, leaving the sum to be expended
upon the exhibit just twice what it was
last year. Clatsop County has appropri
ated 1000 for an exhibit of its resources,
and it is rather hard lines for Sir. Full
erton, with the small sum at bis disposal
to compete with counties so well provid
ed with the sinews of war. Still it would
not surprise o if Columbia was found
to be well up toward the head of the
column. If we do not succeed in at
tracting favorable attention it will cer
tainly not be the fault of ilr. Fullerton,
He has worked hard and unceasingly,
and the compensation allotted him
would hardly pay livery hire fe-r the
traveling he 1ms done in this county. He
will be at Salem two week, and from
personal experieme we know lliey will
be two week of hard work and heavy
expense. No doubt he will feel repaid if
the exhibit proves a am-cese, and it is
not too late lor our people to contribute.
Everyone who can spare the time nr.d
money should attend the State Fair, and
if there I anything worth showing in
Tour neighborhood take it with you, or
if you cannot go, Ben J it by express, ad

BEAUTIFUL
.Scatter the germs of the beautiful ;
By the wayside let them fall,
That a rose may spring by the cottage
gate,
And the vine on the garden wall.
Cover the rough and the rude of earth
With a veil of leaves and flow ers,
And mark with the opennig bud and cup
The march of the summer hours.
Scatter the germs of the beautiful
In the holy shrine of homo;
Let the pure, and the fair, and the
graceful there.
In their loveliest luster come.
Leave uota trace of deformity
In the temple of the heart,
Hut gather about its hearth the gems
Of nature and ol art
Scatter the germs of Jje beautiful
In the depths of this human soul;
They shall bud and blossom, and
thee fruit, f
While the endless agct roll.
Plant with the flowers of charity
The portals of the tomb,
And the fair and tha pure about tby path
In paradise shall bloom.
