AN AUTO ROAD THROUGH THE NEHALEM VALLEY County Judge Trencliard and a aura her of business men of the city of As ton met with Judge Ilnttau of this county at the court house in St. Helens last Thursday afternoon, for the purpose of discussing the construction of a road from St. Helena to Vesper, suitable for automobile travel. In other words a smooth and durable highway, over the mountains and down the valley, to con nert with a similar road from Seaside ' to Vesper, thua (living a continuous automobile road from Fort land to the beach. The matter was quite thorough ly discussed and its advantages to the county 'made manifest. Mr. Whyte, manager of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce agreed to take the matter up with the Portltod auto people, and felt safe in stating thev would be willing to contribute one dollar to every two dol lars spent upon such a road by Colum bia County, with the understanding that the road should be put in Drst-elass condition for auto travel. It seems as if the proposition is a feas ible one, and that the sum necessary can be raised without any increase in the tax burden heretofore placed upon the tax payers in the districts trarereed by the road, and, if this be so, the pro ject will be of very great benefit to Col umbia County. It will undoubtedly be a great advertisement of the beauty and natural wealth of the intervening coun try, and, in- our opinion, will do nearly as much for its development as will the railroad. Heretofore the districts in the Kehalem Valley have cot hesitated to levy a special assessment for road pur poses each year, and, with the immense f increase in the assessed valuation ol timber land;, due to the cruise, such an assessment nest year will beanijilyaJe quate for all Dtiroasaar ana the amount -eontriouted by tiie Fort'ani autjist.ii will be a clear gain. j Follow inn Is complete list of warranty deeds reeordofin the otllce of thecoutity del k from July 20 lo Aiifr. 17, 1007. When ihlsediton of ths Morning As toi litn shall reach the bauds of its thous and of subscriber this morning, the law of Oregon, to that end made and passed, will have operated to the utter exclusion of the gambler and from the tour counties ofthe ilftb Judicial district, to-wtu Clackamas, .Multnomah, Col umbia and Clatsop; and none of these counties will beany the worse for the order made by District Attorney Hodirea 900 but will each and nil lie practically and largely benefitted. For some days natt there lias been 1 noticed on the streets of Astoria, furni ture vans loaded with odd looking, yet 2$) J handsome, parcels of paraphernalia in- cuteti. to ths gambling cult, passing either to the store rooms of it local own ers, to the warehouses of the city for indefinite storage, or to the rail or steamer decks and stations, for ship ment to points more or less remote, but perhaps more amenable to the "sport" and sports, than this bailiwick. The gamblers, big and little, the in- 300 digenous fry that flocks about the vari ous and and sundry "banks" and games, are yielding up their domiciles and rooms and hahitates, one by one, and in groups, are' wending their wavs to other and more suspicious climes ; but they are all jolly, friendly to Anuria, where they have had a long and a good season of Indulgence, and probably have made a fair earnings on the v.uied stakes with which they opened up hero. Astoria cheerfully relinquishes her old and famous title of a "wide-open" I town and will make the b?st of the now regime that places her on a pvr with every other city in the -district. She has no kickcomln;; she is glad of the exemption from the questionable, even unenviable notoriety, that has bfen hers for many a long day; and her municipal guardians will see to it that all her civic bills are paid promptly and fully with the imporlait source of revenue thus cut out. From th s time forth this city will have other and better qualities to make her known and liked throughout the ! land and she will rely upon the clean and lic'pful things she possesses to em phasise her claim to popular toticj and appreciati wi.
