Coroner St. Helens women covernkeht seance In recently published compilation of census bureau etilisties relative to the women workers in the United States it is shown that the government service attracts many and that in clerical work women are quite prominent. Though they are as yet only one to ten in comparison with the miruW of men employed, it Is signiucant that there are no less than 13,332 female government clerks. All hut four btvikg new in lire lu the u minim scholia of Oiviron have Inen Iclmnipd by the State Teat-Rook Com uiNsoii and new text-Woks will be tub- mitU'd at the beginning of the new cchoul year. The fourth and fifth. Cvr readers, the Thomas elementary hiftorv and the Heed speller are the books rvUli.ed. Civil government has been dropped entirely as a sotkio subject and will lie taught In connection with history, Tlid mental milium tie has also been dropped an ! the mental exercues will Uj Riven with the aid of the books on written arilhinnlic. In the place of the two mbj.'ds dropped, mi bnport.tut one has hrcn added, that of elementary agri culture. This addition has been made in response to a very general demand. The principal changes are the substi tution of Wheeler's rvadeis up to the third book of Cyr readers, the adoption of Siiuiii a ttiitiiineiics in the place ol went woitl.'.s, the adaption uf Beuhlei's gram mars in the pb.c of Heed and Kellog'e, the d)piiou of the natural Keogi aphics in the pla e ot Frye's and Dond'a United States history in the l;ice of Thomas' advni.cid history. THC UNWRITTEN LAW Out of a mass of information in regard to the women so employed a few points re of peculiar interest. It appears, for instance, that only 2S0 of the 13,332 are less than 20 years of age, while 15 per cent are over 50. There are more women between 30 and 40 years of age in the government service than between 20 and 30, indicating either that thiy do sot seek this work until pretty well ad vanced in years or that thev have the faculty of staying developed to perfection The fact that there are 1970 on the rolls over 50 years of age shows that in official life women are retained in service at ages far beyond those when retire ment becomes practically compulsory in other occupations. There are few teach ers, or stenographer?, or clerks in busi nea establishments who are retained after passing the half-century mark. As in commercial life so in the govern ment service, the women ai a rule are paid less than men for the same class of work. One reason sngtsteJ for this is that as the heads of departments are almost always men they naturally rat) the man higher than the woman. Ap parently if women are ever to get the justice they claim in the matter of re numeration they must get in toexecaiive positions. When the suffragists get all that they want they will doubtless see to it tliat Uie discrimination in the mat ter of salaries betweeu men and women is abolished. (Umpqua News) Within a week there have been two sluHHing affray in Oregon, both of which were provoked by the knowledge of, or the assumption, that the borne had been entered bv the libertine. In the instance of the Bowlsby-Jennings case, the w ife of the former admitted intimacy with the latter who was killed. Curtis, the famous corre spondent of the Chicago-Record Herald, writes a two-column letter for his paper every day in the year without intermis sion. His powers of sustained w ork are as great a marvel as his faculty of al ways makinghis matter interesting. I'robably no tther newspaper corre spondent in the country is read so regu larly and eagerly by so many thousands of men and women as Mr. Curtw. Jlr. Curtis has traveled several times aronnd the world, visited every couniry under the sun, and written a larger number of brilliant and interring leiters of travel than were ever before produced by a etiigle hand. Many of thee have Inter been reprinted in l ook form. One of his latest expedition f,.r the Chicago RecorJ-HeraM was t'iruiu'i Mexico, re- t ulting in a series of letters as entertain- I P"SJilily at a sli-l.t lew ing as tliote he wn.to a fe years g j vate firms are not in biuine for r.-pn itpjnoiiis, ni'o prove intimacy, as sus pected by the bushand, and this man killed Herbert because he believed him guilty of a great crime. The man who goes into the homj of another and de bauches it, does so at his own risk. lie deserves all he gets and more. There is no punishment sufficiently severe in comparison with the wrong com mitted. Sj long as libertines are found who have no respect for the raeredness i of the home and who exert their smooth villany to accomplish their own base designs, just that long will the unwrit ten law find favor in the hearts of Am erican manhood. It may also be truth fully said in connection herewith that there are frequent cases wlurein women areas cunning and designing as the men. For such class little consideration should be shown. When, nf;er her pir nmoir has been tlx in by the enragod husband, the wife has the nerve to testify aud admit having consorted with the fellow and entertained him at her home on numerous occasions, she is as biij a menace to good society as the man who baa met his death. Any woman of mature age and ordinary intellig ence knows right from wrong and if the seeks the company of others than her lawful husband she is abont on Dar with tha skunk of a man who makes it his busi ness to enter the horns of another and bring shan.e and disgrace not only upon thera-elves but the onftrlunnte off spring, if any there be. It is a very remarkable showing that has been made in the bids for the new 20,000 ton battleship opened at the Navy Department last week. The private ship yard! and the government navy yards all bid oi the new naval monster, but the private firms won hy close to half a million dollar;. There is no ques tion thar there has beeu soaie good work in ship construction turned cut from the Navy Yards in different parts of tha country. But it would sem that there wai no reasin wlivtlie sime Vessle should cost 13 or 20 per cent more when built by the government then when built bv privatj contract. There is just on thing to be said, and that is, that the advertisement coming from seciirn g tuch a pieca of work would perhaps warrant a private yard j in taking it at th very lir.tmi figures, Hut ttie i.n- Whtn weary aud worn with lh trials ol earth and life looks exceetllncly blue.
