Instead of Veing read br possibly 3,000 people in Colum bia county thef have been resd by nossibly one hundred thoatanJ through out the Northwest. We da not mention this through vanity, (for the articles were not copied on account of any lite rary merits they may have possess bnt merely to illustrate the imroer. mnnnt of ood Or harm that may b accomplished by a very humble agency, and to emphasize the fact that the xtitnrr.fa ponntrv newspaper fills sn important position in any community You may start a thonglit wherever too please, so that it will be in reach of a transmitter, and, if it be of sufficient value, it wilt make the circuit of the globe and be translated wherever there is a written language. Not only is this true of thought, but it is true offsets. The seemingly unimpor tant item regarding the resources your neighboibood, published in your local paper, may result in the establish ment of a great industry that will bring wealth and all the conveniences of a populous community to your door. The value of the local newspaper to the county in which it is published depends upon the line of thought it present and the kind of facts it publishes. If its editorial columns are used for the pur pose of praising or condemning without discrimination and from personal or factional motives it i a detriment to those whose interests It should aerve, for a community is judged abroad vtry largely by the character of its local press. If its local columns are filled with accounts of trivial quarrels and dis orders and it dwell upon a row in the church, the school board, or the council, it create the impression that it is pub lished in a quarrelsome community, scch as no valuable immigrant cares to select for a home. If, on theotherhand, it advocates those measures it believes to be for the best interests of all acd gives tlie preferecce to news itccs (un important though thf-y may seem) that tell of betterments to the town, of gooj crops taised in the country and of good people who have arrived to take part in the upbuilding of the e mmunity, then it deserves Tour sunoort. ia order that it may continue to be the source frjm which the outside world uVr.vrs its knowledge of Colombia coauts re sources and its estiruate of our citizen ship. Ore-eon ian) If timber land value in other coun ties are snywhere near the asm as in Columbia County, the plan of having timber land cruised by experts for as sesstnent poraoset i likely to prove a very profitable scheme for the counties that bave undertaken it. There ha been some doabt whether the results would jus'.isy the expense of employing cruisers. In Columbia County much of the cruising hss been done, and, an illustration of results, it 1 asserted that on section llat ha been assessed here tofore at a little let than SUC00 ha tim ber enough on it to be worth titl.OOO for stumpage. A quarter section, 160 acre, which his been assessed io the past at f 1040, is found to contain timber of the value of 123,000. The cruiser not onty makes n estimste of the quantity of timber of the various grade, bnt alao make an examination and reoort upon the toil and topography of th land, so that its value aside from the stsnding timber, may be ascertained approximate ly. In case of litigation the expert will be prepared to back op his figures with evidence of the value of the timber. Ad ding to tlie assessment roll targe sum tike that mentioned, and quite a num ber oi them, will lighten the tax burden upon farmers generally. What it true of Columbia ia pro! ably true of ether counties that incl ide heavily timbered land. Having one examined the tim ber and eiti mated its quantity, the work will not have to be done agsln for a num ber of years. The only changes In quan tity will be those dneto sswing logs or burning timber. With the quantity known Ihe vslue can be easily defa nnin ed for each year, accord i g to Ihe market valne in each particular co.nmnnily. In a pstiud of five or ten years lb original cost ol the cruising wilt not be enough to be worthy of mention, provided tlie work ha been well done.
